Class Experience

Do you love making art? Do you want to learn more about how artists make their masterpieces? Do you want to grow your art skills?

In this 8 week class Ms. Z. uses her classroom experience and the lessons she developed as a certified elementary art teacher to expand the world of art for upper elementary artists. Each week's project focuses on an element of art (line, shape, color, texture, space, value, form) which are the basics of how artists communicate and create their artworks. Students will learn to use the elements of art to express themselves and create their own beautiful masterpieces including. Lessons in this session will have a fall theme, and students may join after the first week, as lessons are independent of one another.

We will begin every class with a short introduction to our project and art element of the week. During this time we will look at and discuss this element of art as seen in photographs or master artworks. Then students will follow step by step directions to make their artworks of the week. While the directions are detailed, students are also encouraged to add their own unique touches to make their artwork truly their own. The goal is for students to have fun while strengthening their artistic muscles.

As students work, feedback, encouragement, and additional instructions are given as needed. If time allows, at the end of class our young artists will have the opportunity to share their artwork with their classmates. **Although each demonstration will be finished by the end of class, students may want to continue working on their masterpiece after we have signed off for the day. Everyone works at a different speed, and it's better to take our time than to rush!

Lessons:
Week 1 (Line): Line Landscapes
Week 2 (Shape): Spooky House Architecture
Week 3 (Color): Warm and Cool Color Lamp Post
Week 4 (Value): Pumpkin Shading
Week 5 (Texture): Dragon Eyes
Week 6 (Space): Bird's Eye View City
Week 7 (Form): Pirate Ships with 3D Sails
Week 8 (Combination of Elements): Symmetrical Mask Drawings
Learning Goals
-Students will be able to create their own masterpieces using the elements of art.
-Students will be able to communicate about their artworks and the artworks of others using essential art vocabulary such as: line, shape, form, value, color, foreground, and background
