Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Please note: In a Flex class, there are NO LIVE MEETINGS. This means your child will receive pre-recorded video lessons they can watch at their own pace on whatever schedule works best! Each video lesson will utilize a top view camera to show up close each step in detail. I maintain consistent contact with learners throughout the course to answer questions, explain concepts and techniques in more detail, and provide positive and constructive feedback. Your learner decides how interactive this class can be, from quietly/privately completing projects, to sending pictures of every step and communicating daily. HOW IT WORKS: The day your class begins, I will post the video tutorial in the classroom by 6am est. It will be available for the duration of the Flex session and after for 90 days. Students may work on their paintings using this recording as their schedule allows! By the following Sunday, students are to submit a photo and/or video of their work including any explanations they would like to add about their work or process via comments in the classroom or a video explanation. I will give detailed individual feedback to each and every post. I LOVE seeing student work and look forward to seeing each student's individual style shine through in their artwork! Students may view other student submissions throughout the week to see how each learner worked to complete their pictures and post questions or comments in the classroom for our community of learners to see and respond to. I will model ways to offer constructive criticism and kind compliments so students learn appropriate ways to discuss other's artwork. CLASS DETAILS Your video tutorial will be approximately 40 minutes long, videos are broken up into Section 1: The Drawing, Section 2: Watercolor techniques and painting. As with all of my classes, if the student's art work takes a different turn, I fully encourage them to go with it and see where it leads! Creativity and the art process is always more important than the product! All drawings and paintings will be demonstrated via a top view camera on quality watercolor paper. Students are free to add any materials they wish to enhance their drawings, such as colored pencils, marker, chalk. SUPPLIES -Watercolor paper (size approx 6x9, half sheet) -Brushes: small and medium soft hair round/pointed sz 4 and 8 -Watercolor paint set (pot set or concentrated tube set) -Water cup -Paper towel, cotton swab -Pencil

Hello Outschool community!
I am April Taylor. I live with my amazing family in New York and I have been teaching visual arts on Outschool for 3+ years. I’ve been told I was “born to teach”. On Outschool, I teach art classes for children ages 8 and older. I I have classes in acrylic and watercolor painting, realistic drawing, and clay work. I hold a Bachelors degree in Art Education and a Masters degree in Professional Studies, where I focused on Humanistic and Multicultural Educational practices. I have 18+ years teaching experience in Prek-8 in virtual and in person settings.
As a teacher, I like to keep class fun, upbeat, and flexible. During classes, I encourage balance, in terms of focus and discussion/communicating with myself and classmates. Interaction, open discussion about planning, and ideas/suggestions for their own or other's art is highly valuable, as is, quiet focus and concentration. In every class, I teach using a step by step approach to demonstrate how to do the skills and use the materials. I feel this provides a solid foundation for students to master skills and then put them to practice once they become more confident and independent. I also encourage creativity and encourage students to add or omit elements from their work that make it unique to them. I would much rather have 8 different drawings at the end, than exact replicas of mine! If a child wants to take their project in a different direction, I fully support and encourage them to do so!
When I am not painting and working with clay, I love being out in nature, spending time with my husband, two hockey loving boys, and our dog child.
I look forward to meeting your child and helping them grow their love for art and learning. I hope to see your child in my classes soon!
