Class Experience

This class is related to my Architecture 101 class. That class was about teaching learners about the basics of architecture skills.
In this class, we will focus more on various forms of architecture and learners will engage and practice in more practical skills. Learners will have 4 homework assignments to complete.

Day 1: Architecture
We will review what architecture is. We will also discuss the concept of perspective drawing. We will examine how it is helpful and how to complete one. We will also look at generic perspective drawing. The case study for this class will be looking at Sagrada Familia, Hagia Sophia, and modern buildings like the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Homework: Learners will have to complete a perspective drawing.

Day 2: Landscape Architecture
We will view and understand landscape architecture. We will also learn how it interplays with architecture. During this class, we will examine how perspective drawing takes place in landscape architecture and understand the differences between the two. We will look at Central Park in New York as a great example of various elements of architecture.
Homework: Learners will create their own park with the new knowledge they have about landscape architecture.

Day 3: Interior Architecture
The balance of the art and science of designing interior spaces. We will look at elements and how this kind of architecture is different and similar. We will discuss the roles of interior architects versus interior designer. We will discuss changes in furniture design and the impact it has with how people live and interact with space.
Homework: Learners will create a kitchen design

Day 4: Urban Architecture
The process of designing and shaping the physical features of cities and towns. We are going to explore this macro level of architecture. and understand how this works. We will look at Barcelona, Savannah, Los Angeles, and New York to understand this large scale planning.
Homework: Students must create a downtown/main street plan using a perspective drawing reference. The elements will comprise of buildings, sidewalks, streetscape, lighting, and uniform building facades. The more detail provided - the better.

Day 5: Presentation Day
This final class will dedicated to reviewing what we learned about and wrapping up classes with presentations from the students about their downtown/main street design. This class may run shorter than 55 minutes.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Melissa Guter and I am passionate about education. I received my masters degree in school counseling. I also have my bachelors degree in sociology. My passion topics are mostly social emotional learning, college & career readiness, student success skills, history, planning, architecture and understanding how those subjects intertwine. I believe that each student deserves to be seen as an individual with unique needs that should be met each day. I have worked in education for about a decade. I began working as a university advisor and got to experience issues that adult students face. Once I started working at the K-12 level, I got to experience the many struggles they endure and try to help them. It has been my passion to help each family. I have vast familiarity with multiple homeschool programs, philosophies, and curriculum since I have been homeschooling for the last 6 years. It is my passion to ensure that children are building themselves up and identify their own needs.
