>>>PLEASE READ BEFORE ENROLLING:
The live portion of this class is an hour-long, fast-paced, lecture-based presentation, with limited Q&A breaks as time permits -- you know your learner(s) best, so please consider if the session length and format is a good fit for them<<<

Picasso's art is full of different animal subjects, but he depicted birds more often than any other. One bird in particular, the owl, became a major motif of his work from the late 1940s into the 1960s -- and this had a lot to do with Picasso's adoption of an injured Little Owl (Athene noctua) in 1946. In this session we will learn the story of how Ubu the Little Owl came into Picasso's life, as well as learn a bit about both the Little Owl's natural history and cultural history in Europe. And of course, we will look at some of the paintings, drawings, and ceramics that Ubu inspired!

This single live session will consist primarily of slides accompanied by lecture, but there will be opportunities to ask questions, and of course the Classroom board will be available for open discussion before and after class as well.

This class is part of the ANIMALS IN WORLD ART HISTORY series.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in History from Lindenwood University
Master's Degree in Science from American Public University
I'm a naturalist with a focus on zoology, and mainly teach animal science courses...but as part of my longstanding interests in both the animal kingdom AND art and culture, I began conducting independent research on how animals have been depicted in art around the world, and am now back in graduate school working on a second Masters thesis about it! :) In conjunction with my current research, I am now offering this series of short courses on different subjects in Animals in World Art History in addition to my regular zoology classes.

I also have nearly two decades experience as a home education advocate, including homeschooling my own children from preschool through high school. I am a big proponent of flexible learning, individualized education, and supporting fellow neurodiverse learners, so please don't hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or requests for additional resources. We all learn in our own way and time, but everyone should have the chance to learn about how cool animals are!
