Week 1Lesson 1What is a Marine MammalIn this lesson we will explore what exactly a marine mammal is, learn vocabulary words, and sort animals into the four main family groups of marine mammals.Lesson 2WhalesLets explore the differences between baleen and toothed whales. We will explore 4 different whales filling out worksheets for each. Students will label internal and external whale anatomy. There will also be a science experiment with this lesson.Week 2Lesson 3ManateesDiving into the world of manatees, students will learn about how they care for their young, facts about manatee, their diet, anatomy, habitat and more!Lesson 4Sea OttersSplashing into the world of sea otters, students will explore their habitat, learn anatomy, learn facts. This lesson is followed by an edible project!Week 3Lesson 5DolphinsIn this lesson we will explore saltwater and freshwater dolphins with a venn diagram. We will learn about echolocation, anatomy, diet, and map where dolphins live.Lesson 6Seals & Sea LionsJumping in students learn the difference between seals and sea lions. They will discover how seals care for their young, learn why seals have whiskers, explore their diet, habitat, anatomy and common breeds. This lesson will be followed by a science experimentWeek 4Lesson 7WalrusSplashing into the world of walruses, students will learn about how they care for their young, label anatomy, discover their amazing tusks, and learn about their prey and predators!Lesson 8Polar BearsStudents will learn why polar bears are classified as marine mammals, explore a mothers den, and discover many amazing characteristics of polar bears! We will map where polar bears live, learn about their habitat, and diet. Students will learn about unique adaptations polar bears have and label their anatomy. This lesson is followed by a hands on science experiment and edible craft.

I have worked as a preschool teacher, church youth teacher, 4H leader/adviser, and have homeschooled my own children for over 11 years! Students are expected to print and complete worksheets during class, and complete science experiments and edible projects after class.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class

Students will need a printer to print worksheets, pencil, colored pencils, scissors and glue for most lessons. See lesson break down for needed experiment/edible project supplies. Lesson 2 supplies: Bowl of water 1-2 tablespoons of oats (other cereal will work) Small toothed comb Cup Lesson 4 supplies: Spoon Bowl Plate Vanilla Wafer Cookies (any tan colored cookie or small round cookie will work) Frosting (can be white or colored, we will need white frosting for lesson 8 so I use white and color half for this project) Food Coloring (optional) Pearl Candy (optional) Lesson 6 supplies: quart size plastic bag rubber band that will fit over your wrist bowl or water big enough to move your hand around in towel for clean up Lesson 8 supplies: Experiment: A toy with small feet, this can be a dog, dinosaur, horse or even an action figure. Cardboard Scissors Painters or masking tape Flat dish with flour deep enough for toy to "step" in Edible Project: White frosting (saved from lesson 4) Large marshmallows Mini marshmallows Mini chocolate chips Plate Butter knife
Students may need help completing some of the experiments depending on age and ability. Students may need help with edible projects as spreading and cutting with a butter knife is involved.
