Class Experience

In each class, we will learn about a new animal.  We will cover its common name, scientific name, use the animal classification chart to learn how animals are grouped (Kingdom, Phylum, Order, Class, Family, and Genus), look at various photos and videos of the animal, discuss habitats and diet, and go over some fun facts before having a multiple choice quiz that we will complete as a group. I will use PowerPoint presentations, youtube videos that support information on the animal, various props, and occasionally a live animal or two during class to teach about the various animals we will cover.

Week of 10/4/21, - We will cover animals Viverra capensis, Varanus komodoensis, and Apis mellifera.

Week of 10/11/21 - We will cover animals Panthera tigris tigris, Casuarius Tursiops, and Periophthalmus argentilineatus.

Week of 10/18/21- We will cover animals Helarctos malayanus, Ophisaurus ventralis, and Archilochus colubris.

Week of 10/25/21 We will cover animals Solenopsis invicta Buren, Orcinus orca, and Pan paniscus.

( Animal names are purposely in a form not easily recognized in order to maintain somewhat of a surprise during class.)

At the beginning of each class, we will introduce ourselves and tell our favorite animal/animals we can see in our neighborhoods/ favorite type of animal (favorite bear) / etc.  After that, I will introduce the new animal to the learners using a PowerPoint presentation and various props as we discuss our background knowledge of that animal.  We will then move into the classification, location, diet, and habitats of the animal we are covering. Learners will be encouraged to ask questions and discuss with the teacher and other learners.  High-level open-ended questions will be asked to stimulate critical thinking skills. Learners also may watch a video clip during this time to support their understanding of the animal.  Next, we will complete a quick and fun multiple choice "quiz" that will test the understanding of the information presented on the animal that day.  We will do this as a group in various ways that may include but are not limited to giving each learner a turn to answer one of the questions, writing answers on paper and holding it up for the group to see, eliminating answers that are clearly wrong, and then finding the correct one together.  We will then end with an art project that is based on the animal we have learned about that day.  The art supplies need will be simple such as crayons, markers, colored pencils, and possibly scissors and/or a glue stick.  We will start the art project together and learners will be able to continue with it after class on their own.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! My name is Auja Norman and I have been in education as an elementary school teacher for the last 10 years. I really enjoy supporting my students with early reading and writing skills while broadening their knowledge about biological and environmental sciences. I love animals and have a house full of dogs, cats, turtles, snakes, and several fish tanks that host crabs, fish, and more! I believe that creating excitement about learning is so important and makes life long learners who will make a difference in the world. I can't wait to meet your student and bring the magic of reading into their lives.
