Learners will understand animal cells and the human body. Learners will be able to identify various ways in which body systems work together to perform life functions and maintain homeostasis in the body.
I have my bachelors degree in science in Nutrition from Florida State University. My degree included all pre-med prerequisites (cell biology, microbiology, organic chemistry, chemistry, physics, anatomy and physiology - 2 college semesters). I also worked as a pharmaceutical sales representative and had additional training in the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, and urinary systems. I am a former middle school science teacher in Florida public schools and have been teaching middle and high school students on Outschool since 2020. I originally developed this course as part of a contract for a post-secondary health program and have adapted it to the high school level for Outschool. I recently heard from the director of the program and she had this to say about the course materials:
"Hi Stephanie, - I may just have to thank you after every class! (The students) are just so grateful for your classes - the combo we created is just so effective - I am so grateful. Thank you!"
Homework Offered
Printable diagrams will be provided that learners can label during the lecture clips. Not required. 10-question lesson quizzes are provided at the end of the Nearpod Slides for those who would like a grade issued. Learners may use teacher slides or diagrams while completing quizzes.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Nearpod Interactive Slides: these are for practice, but feedback will be provided (no grade) 10-Question Lesson Quizzes: these are required if you would like a grade to be issued. Printable Diagrams that learners can label during lecture clips: these are not required.
Grades Offered
Grade issued upon request. Grades will be based on lesson quizzes and any diagrams that are turned in.
B-roll footage in lecture videos to keep learners engaged and drive points home in a visual way. Flexible deadline schedule. Interactive Nearpod Activity Slides to keep learners engaged. Diagrams and quizzes are optional (up to parents).
None (an animal cell biology overview/review is provided in lesson 1).
computer/smart device (Nearpod app for smart device - which is free)
printer paper (for diagrams which are optional)
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Female and male anatomy are studied in lesson 9. Optional diagrams of female and male anatomy will be provided that learners can label. This is not sexual education, but taught from the perspective of the structure and functions of the reproductive systems.
