Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
This introduction to taxes will be a highly interactive class. We'll start off by talking as a group about the services learners enjoy in their communities that are typically paid for through taxes.

Then, learners will work as a group to define what a tax is.

We'll then discuss the three most popular taxes that Americans pay: sales, income, and property. The learners will be introduced to items that are typically taxed in each category and the idea that the tax rate varies by locality. We'll wrap up with a hands-on exercise to determine how much would be paid in taxes for certain items.

Learning Goals

At the end of the course learners will know the definition of a tax, the three most common types in America, and have practiced calculating how much they will pay in taxes on certain items.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, I'm Jake! I have a BA in Political Science and Spanish. For the past nine and a half years I've worked for a youth-serving nonprofit organization. I spent five of those years as a program director responsible for creating age appropriate programming for youth between the ages of five and ten. I've also been fortunate enough through this organization to work at summer camp for eight summers teaching a number of skills based subjects.

I endeavor to make my classes highly engaging and fun. Students should expect to be asked lots of questions during class rather than sitting in a lecture as I believe this helps students develop their critical thinking skills.

You'll find me teaching classes about outdoor skills, civics, and even some sports. I hope to see you in class!
