Description

Class Experience

Students will learn the most iconic American symbols and monuments, and the history and significance behind them. Symbols and monuments will include: the Abraham Lincoln Memorial, the White House, the Washington Monument, Mount Rushmore, the Statue of Liberty, the Star-Spangled Banner, the Liberty Bell, The Great Seal of the United States, the Bald Eagle, Old Glory, and more
I love history and culture. I am an after-school ESL tutor. During eight years of tutoring English as a Second Language I've also tutored in cultural competency. My students come from homes where English is not spoken and are not brought up with regular discussions of cultural icons and American symbolism as a usual topic of discussion. 
Students will be able to download several worksheets for note-taking. Students are encouraged to research one or more of the American symbols of their choice and present the information in poster form on the second class meeting.
Several worksheets will be provided for note-taking. Students are encouraged to present a poster of am American symbol of their choice in the second class meeting. Poster board, cardboard, or some paper for the poster will be necessary. Markers can be used.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
There will be no formal assessment, but interested students can present their poster during the fourth class meeting.  Their is also an informal assessment during a Q & A in the fourth class meeting.
40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
