Class Experience

Each week we will focus on one topic to learn vocabulary and how to use it in a basic sentence. As I teach each sign, learners will produce the sign back for me to see. As a result of this teaching style, it is imperative that cameras stay on for the duration of class. The class structure will be:
*opening introductions
*a simple social question asked in ASL to evaluate skill level
*teaching of the topic of the day; vocabulary and sentences
*practice; this may be with the whole group or learners paired up, depending on the size of the group
*a game, video, song or other format to enhance the topic of the day
*open to questions, requests, comments
*farewell

Topics will include:
Week 1, July 6: FOOD
Week 2, July 13: EMOTIONS and COLORS
Week 3, July 20: FAMILY
Week 4, July 27th: TIME
Week 5, Aug 10th: ANIMALS
Week 6, Aug 17th: SEASONS/WEATHER
Week 7, Aug 24th: SPORTS/ACTIVITIES
Week 8, Aug 31st: MONEY
**If these topics are not appropriate for the group in the class, I will adjust for something more appropriate for the skill level and interest.

I believe learning should be fun. So I do everything I can to help students enjoy their time in my classroom. We learn a lot in a short period of time. So I post learning aids in the classroom after class is over for practice or review.

We work together and a basic understanding of the language is important for joining this class. This class is for students who are learning American Sign Language. This is not a class for brand new beginners. Learners need to know the Alphabet, Numbers and basic vocabulary at a minimum. I will also discuss the Deaf Community, their history and the importance of our respect for their language.

Learning Goals

Students will learn vocabulary based on the Topic for the day and how to use it in basic sentences. For example, for the topic of food, learners will learn MILK, WATER, BREAD, EGGS, HUNGRY, THIRSTY and many more words. Then they will practice putting them in sentences such as "Are you hungry" = "HUNGRY YOU?" This will also include learning to index people and facial expressions.
