Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - Kindergarten
In these seven weeks of fun, we'll learn about colors, shapes, letters, and numbers in both English and American Sign Language. The ASL component of this class serves as an introduction to a new language, but the class is not taught fully in ASL or only geared to ASL users.

How the classes will run:

- The first five minutes of each class session will be dedicated to taking roll and a fun intro song to prepare learners for the session's content of that day. The song we'll start off each day with will be Friends Make the World Go Round by Gaia Tossing.
- For the next 10 minutes we will go over the session's topic for the day. Parental assistance is encouraged, though following Outschool policy, are to remain out of screen as much as possible.
- If students become restless we'll spontaneously sing and dance to a song halfway through class to break up the monotony and keep kids engaged and active
- Each class session will include a home scavenger hunt in which learners are encouraged to search their houses for items encompassing an aspect of what they learned during that session (letters, numbers, shapes or colors) and share them with the group.
 - Each class will conclude with a goodbye song

How each topic is approached:

Alphabet - Students will learn to identify their letters and the corresponding sounds as well as the ASL handshapes. They will also learn several beginner's signs pertaining to the ASL handshapes that correspond with the letter and sound of various words. For example, the sign for "READY" uses the "R" handshape and the sign for "YES" uses the "Y" handshape and both English words begin with the very letter of the alphabet that is being signed on the hand. Thus, students will practice letter sound recognition at the same time as learning the ASL letter handshapes with real ASL signs. Around Six letters will be covered over the span of four weeks (sessions).

Colors - Students will learn to identify their colors and the corresponding sign through activity-based instruction. They will be called upon to use crayons to create fun drawings with each learned color. The crayon colors they will need are as follows: blue, red, yellow, orange, green, purple, brown, and black.

Numbers - Students will learn to identify their numbers up to ten, the corresponding sign for each number, and what they signify in terms of amounts and counting.

Shapes - Students will learn to identify their shapes and the corresponding sign through activity-based instruction. They will be called upon to use paper and their crayons to draw each shape in a specified color.
