This is a one time introductory course to American Sign Language. In this course we we learn: 1. What is ASL 2. How ASL is different from English grammatically 3. Basic signs including: ME, SCHOOL, LEARN, YOU, HOME,SIGN, HE/SHE/IT, LIKE, GO, DON’T LIKE, COME, NEED,HELP, HAVE, LEARN, BATHROOM, WANT, WHAT 4. Basic phrases including: I'm learning to sign. I want to go home, I'm hearing, nice to meet you, What's your name 5. What is Deaf Culture 6. How to interact with Deaf people We will talk about the basics of ASL grammar, comparing it English grammar, and touch on Deaf Culture - discussing how it is different from American hearing culture- focusing on social norms. This course can serve as an interest course for those who may be interested in a full ASL course or want to just learn a few basics to interact with Deaf people in your life. No prior knowledge is required.
Learning Goals
The goal of this course is to learn basic phrases of ASL, understand that ASL has a different grammar structure than English, and understand that Deaf Culture is its own unique culture, separate from hearing culture.
