LAMPRA JONES My sign is “L” nice. My primary interest in ASL started when I was five years old when I was watching a group of Deaf adults signing before a theatrical play. I started learning ASL at the age of five through a Christian school as well as teaching myself. During my time in college, I obtained a degree in American Sign Language and Deaf Studies. Learning ASL would benefit me due to the fact that when I became a young adult, I lost my hearing due to Meniere’s disease. I’m considered a Late Deaf in the Deaf community because I lost my hearing when I became a young adult. For the past eleven years, I have been organizing Deaf social events in the metro Atlanta area. In addition, I’m known as the Deaf nerd/cosplayer in the cosplay community in Atlanta. I’m part of different charity cosplay groups that volunteer to attend hospital visits, children’s events, parades, hospice, and etc. I’m the only Deaf individual in these groups as well as the first Deaf individual to join. I’m a proud mother of an eleven-year autistic son, Solomon, who is fluent in ASL and is very much part of the Deaf community just like his mother. He’s considered a CODA (Child Of Deaf Adult). In our household, we use ASL and English. We have a three-year-old Autistic Service Dog, Sammie, that knows English and ASL also!
