Homework
1-2 hours per week. Learners will have videos and other fun activities after watching each video.
Assessment
Formal and Informal Assessment - Parents and Learners will receive a biweekly update on the learner's progress. Assessments are done by submitting learner videos to the teacher. Feedback is given to both the learner and parents
Progress Report
Grades are offered, and they are pass or fail. Grades are valued by the learner's Expressive Skill—using the language of signs and fingerspelling to express oneself. The other skill is the Learner's Receptive Skill—understanding sign language and fingerspelling expressed by another. The last assessment is understanding Deaf Culture and Deaf History.

Class Experience

Beginner Level
Hello and Welcome. We are Groovy Learning, and this is Part 1 of 3 in the Beginner American Sign Language class. It is designed to help you understand the words and simple sentences.

This class is not just about learning, but also about having fun and getting your child comfortable using their hands to communicate in American Sign Language. 

You don't need any prior knowledge of American Sign Language.  We will learn words and simple sentences, between 20 and 50 signs each week.

Each week, learners will interact by the following:
Learners can ask any questions from videos, and to do videos themselves, we ask that your learner's face be included.
I will receive the video privately or on the classroom page, and I will provide feedback either privately or on the classroom page. 
I will post a sign on the classroom page each week to see if the learner knows the sign by commenting on the classroom page.
Lessons are designed to be flexible and adaptable to your child's learning style. Questions about Lessons can be sent privately or on the classroom page, giving you the freedom to choose the best way for your child to learn.

Parental Guidance
No live meetings, self-pace to watch videos and answer or video answer each week! Learner will be asked to video themselves sign Vocabulary or Sentence at the end of each lesson. The reason why we do this our goal is to help your learner with their Expressive Skills which is using the language of signs and fingerspelling to express oneself and the next is the Receptive Skill which is to understand sign language and fingerspelling expressed by another. The worksheets that are included are not requirement by a recommendation. We are excited to by working with your learner in this class.

Here at Groovy Learning, we focus on learning while making it impactful to the outside world. We are a woman-owned and family-owned organization that wants to impact learners the most. Ms. Annmarie spearheaded a dynamic parent/child ASL program for seven years, using sign language to bridge familial communication. Concurrently, I've spent four years immersing preschool children in the ASL world, underscoring this visual dialect's versatility. Previously, Ms. Annmarie has taught at Outschool since 2020. From Ms. Annmarie, "My affinity for ASL spans two decades. I boast an Associate's Degree in ASL Interpretation and a Child Development Associate certification in Early Childhood Education. I spent 11 years in Florida at the renowned Deaf Literacy Center, crafting tailored ASL programs for learners from infants to adults." Ms. Nicole is hard of hearing and has personal, first-hand experience with the deaf community. She graduated from Colorado State University in 2022 with two bachelor's degrees in Communication Studies and Interdisciplinary Liberal Arts. Ms. Nicole has taught at Outschool since 2020. We have both been using ASL and studying the language for 20+ years. In our classes, we focus on learning and making it enjoyable for every learner who takes our classes. We offer all age groups and all types of classes. Ms. Annmarie focuses on the 3-10 age group, Ms. Nicole focuses on the 12-18 age group, and we jointly take on the 10-12 age group as that is a transitional age group from Ms. Annmarie to Ms. Nicole.
