Class Experience

In this basic beginner-level interactive course, students will learn Animal related signs in ASL through an animal story-time. The students will learn signs for cat, dog, bear, squirrel, bird, and more. The students will learn the signs for their favorite animals. The signs will be demonstrated to the students, and students are encouraged to sign back to the teacher in order to ensure proper hand-shapes, and palm orientations. Upon completion of this course, the students will be equipped with the skill to communicate animal signs in American Sign Language. No prior experience in American Sign Language is necessary for this class.
Learning Goals
The goal for this course is for students to gain a knowledge of the signs for animals in American Sign Language in order to aid them with basic communication skills. Also to provide students with a foundation in ASL that they can further develop.

Hello, I am Samoan! I am passionate about sign language. I started learning the language over 23 years ago. I am a certified sign language interpreter, ASL teacher, and children’s author. I am a former Languages Other Than English (LOTE) High school teacher. I've worked as an interpreter in the education sector (collegiate and K-12) for over 12 years. I graduated college with a Certificate in American Sign Language Communication Skills, an Associate of Arts, a Bachelor of Science, and a Master of Education degree. I am currently attending school to obtain a doctorate of education degree in educational leadership. I fell in love with American Sign Language at the age of 9 years old after going to church with my mother. During the church service, I witnessed sign language interpreters translate the sermon. I was mesmerized by the flow of their hand-shapes. I told my mother that I wanted to learn sign language as well. My mother enrolled me in a sign language class at a local community college during a summer program. I continued to learn sign language throughout high school and college. I have previously volunteered to teach sign language at daycare centers and preschools. American Sign Language is a beautiful language with its own grammar and syntax. I hope to share my love and passion for sign language with others.
