Class Experience

This will be a 3 day camp with our American Girl dolls (actually any doll is welcome)!

This class is being offered during the holiday season because it is supposed to be fun, no pressure-school's out for the holidays!

Day 1:
We will start by introducing ourselves, and our dolls. Even I, Beth B., will have a doll with me.

I will read a small part of The Little Princess to the students. In the book there is a description of what the main character Sara thinks dolls do when humans are not around. She believes they can play, walk and talk, but the minute a human being is around they go back to where they were left. I loved to imagine as a child my dolls coming to life when I was not around:
-What did they do?
-Where did they go?
-What toys of mine did they play with?
-Did they stay in my room, or did they venture out to the rest of my apartment?
-I lived in New York City-did they have actual adventures?

Prior to the first class I will message printables to you to print out so the students and I can discuss these questions in class, and work on it together. Again, this is supposed to be fun so students will be encouraged to write down the answers however they want-they can do it with words, with sentences or even pictures.

Day 2:
We will go over what everyone has answered with their questions. For example if it was my doll I might have answered that she went to go look for my pug Eloise. Together Eloise and my doll went outside. I live near a theme park so my doll took Eloise the pug to a theme park.
With going over these answers I will discuss how we can start constructing a story-where did the doll find Eloise? When they went outside what was the weather like? Maybe it was a torrential downpour, and they had to find shelter. They found shelter in a toy boat. and was whisked away to the theme park.
I will show how layering on creates a richer, more creative story.

Day 3:
We will go around and tell the story of our dolls.
I will use this last class to go over the ways in which we created the story. Creating stories can often seem daunting, or too much like something you would do in school. But it is really about being creative. And by creating a story for our dolls, we are also helping create their story-the story or stories of their favorite doll.

NOTE: If there are less than 6 learners the class may be less than 45 minutes.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am so excited about the classes I will be teaching!

I am excited to be in a setting where I can get children engaged in different areas of learning: reading, writing, study skills and travel!
When it comes to reading and engaging with books my philosophy is that there is no right or wrong answer-as long as you are giving thought to what you bring up to discuss that is the winning answer. An added bonus with a setting like this is we learn to see that whether we have the same, similar, or different thoughts we can treat each other with respect and be open minded.

Study Skills-I plan to offer for different ages. As a mom of a 12 year old I have realized that school does not always teach basic study skills. When I was in school we were taught strategies for memorizing and retaining information.

I have started helping my daughter and her friends use the strategies that got me all the way through my school career. I love helping students see that basic study skill tips can put them on a road for success in education.

Writing Classes! I have been writing ever since I was really little. I graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a B.A. in English- my concentration was in American Literature and also Creative Writing. I went on to get my Master's in Social Work from Columbia University where pretty much I was constantly writing. I also have two blogs where I do a lot of travel and life writing. Currently I am in the process of writing a novel which I hope to have published in Spring 2021.

In the past few years in addition to my writing I have been substituting in my local schools with all ages. I have enjoyed substituting because I have been able to work with many different students.

Something Personal:
Most of my time when I am not working is spent with my family-my 13 year old daughter, and my parents. We also have a pug named Eloise who makes all of us laugh on a daily basis.
