Class Experience

Get ready to enjoy a fun filled class with letters, sounds and your favorite toy, food or any items that starts with the letters of the day. So if we are learning the letter “A”, students can show an apple, an abacus, or a picture of an alligator; these are called the Letter Friends. Students will be able to ask each other about their letter friend. We will go over 3 letters each class. Students will learn to identify letters and sounds. Letter friends will help students to correlate the letter sound to objects. We will use letter friends as props and sharing to engage students to participate.

*Drop in each week or choose the weeks your kid needs to review. Please look at the schedule below to see which letters we are covering on a particular day.

Flow of the Class:
Introductions: What is your name? How old are you? What do you like to do? (4 min.)
First letter of the day: Letter song, sound and dance. Teacher shares her letter friend.
Student shares their color sheet or their personal drawing of the letter and their letter friend. (7 min.)
Second Letter of the day Letter song, sound and dance. Teacher shares her letter friend.
Student shares their color sheet or their personal drawing of the letter and their letter friend.(7 min.)
Third Letter of the day: Letter song, sound and dance. Teacher shares her letter friend.
Student shares their color sheet or their personal drawing of the letter and their letter friend.(7 min.)

Notes:
*Letter friends do not have to be extravagant. They can be simple items from your home. You can even use pictures from magazines. Possible letter friends: cup, pencil, colors, backpack, notebook, book etc.
* Links to free printable letter pages will be emailed to students.
*The NSW Department of Education suggests teaching the letters of the alphabet in small groups “of quick succession…so students can begin blending and segmenting as soon as possible” (NSW DEET, 2009 p.17 ) and these groupings follow the Carnine order (eg ‘a’, ‘m’, ‘t’, ‘s’, ‘i’, ‘f’, ‘d’).
