Beginner - Advanced Level
This is a FUN, mics-on, friendly class, where kids can share their excitement for anime and manga with friends! This ongoing Procreate class will explore different anime and manga subjects each week. We move step-by-step to practice observational skills using new references each week, a variety of brushes, smudge tools, eraser textures, color palettes, line weight and style, lighting, shadow, shading, perspective, foreshortening, texture and more. Each week is different, and provides a steady practice that builds over time into confidence and trusted intuition! Our classes are anchored in kindness, affirmations and fun! We do not use competitions or comparing. Constructive, hamburger-style critiques are offered by the teacher at the student’s request (and many feel safe and confident to ask!). There is a variety of skill level in each group, and we validate and help kids feel good about wherever their skill is. Kids love to share their art and bond over what they love and struggle with. Skills build with time and practice! ✨ We teach kids how to find joy and delight in their practice, which motivates them to do it more. We teach them to see shape, line and form in the most complex references, which builds the confidence to draw, texturize, style and create art from literally anything you can imagine or see! ✅ Procreate Skills: 👉🏼 layers 👉🏼 color selection 👉🏼 opacity 👉🏼 color palettes 👉🏼 selection tool 👉🏼 transform tools 👉🏼 drawing guides 👉🏼 drop fills 👉🏼 animation 👉🏼 quick shapes 👉🏼 brushes 👉🏼 textures 👉🏼 saving files 👉🏼 file size/DPI/resolution 👉🏼 and so much more! ✅ Artist Skills: 👉🏼 color theory 👉🏼 line 👉🏼 light & shadow 👉🏼 shape 👉🏼 composition 👉🏼 gradients 👉🏼 textures with 👉🏼 seeing the line and shape in references multiple brushes 👉🏼 simplifying/stylizing 👉🏼 value 👉🏼 gesture 👉🏼 sketching loose 👉🏼 mood 👉🏼 trusting instincts 👉🏼 expanding interests 👉🏼 failure=growth 👉🏼 experimenting 👉🏼 and so much more! 💥 By trying and practicing a variety of techniques, learners will develop their own style and begin to trust their intuition as their visual vocabulary expands! 👉🏼 Growth Mindset: Over time our students feel powerful and capable in many other areas of life because the work they’ve done in our class shows them that they can do hard things, and they can stick with it. 🤓 All while connecting and laughing together with friends! We work on a variety of subjects based on what kids are asking for: manga, anime, Sailor Moon, Genshin Impact, Jujutsu Kaisen, Spirited Away, Studio Ghibli, My Neighbor Totoro, Sonic, Chi's Sweet Home, Pokemon, Kirby, Haru and more! EXPERIENCE: This is a Beginner to Advanced class that's more like a club! We will work step-by-step for learners just starting out, while more advanced students can move ahead adding nuance, detail and style with the guidance of the teacher! ✨ We practice and discuss the process of art making, from fundamentals like line, shape, value and color, to connecting over what we love, what we struggle with, how to persevere through doubt and disappointment in our art making and ultimately learn how to trust the process and develop trust in our intuition. ✨ We have time to share work and connect over shared interests at the beginning and end of each class! Students do not have to share and it’s never a big deal to pass. Chatting and sharing happen mostly at the beginning and end of class, with the majority of time in the middle spent on step-by-step focused work. ✨ We focus on learning and process—most classes will not end with a “finished” piece. Instead, students will build and practice the tools and techniques needed to continue with the piece between classes! ✨ You can join anytime or pop in whenever it fits in your schedule! ✨Students who want to practice even more, look for one of my self-paced classes to get started! https://outschool.com/classes/4e448664-e6dc-4d6a-8a2c-f0aa08c16445/schedule ✨ This class is collaborative--I want to know what you love to make art about? What do you want to get better at? What do you think of the illustration world/design world? What do you want to know about having a job as an illustrator? I will find a way to incorporate all ideas into classes (as long as they are age-appropriate 😉 :) ✨ Over time, our classes give students the skills and confidence they need to draw and paint anything, anywhere, anytime, and the intuition to create from inside, not for trends. ✨ Many of my students stay with me for years, and when you age out of this group I encourage you to join a teen or cohort class :) 🏳️🌈✊🏽 ✨This is an inclusive, anti-racist, LGBTQIA+ safe space where every member can feel empowered to be themselves and create art that reflects the world they dream about! • Bring your ideas and an open mind! • Classes may run up to ten minutes late depending on sharing, learner questions and discussion. • Mics ON is allowed and encouraged (assuming no background noise-in which case just mute while not talking)! TOPICS SCHEDULE: (Almost all topics are student-driven requests at this point. So sometimes our topics might change, as I make an effort to combine requests as best I can so we can get through more of them faster! Self-paced classes are pre-recorded versions of this same class, with step-by-step instruction on making art from references, and you can watch them at your own pace! I plan to continue to build my library of self-paced classes, so send me your topic requests, follow me and check back often!
Learning Goals
Students will learn and practice drawing fundamentals including: breaking complex references into basic shapes and lines, seeing and drawing in perspective, editing proportions and understanding foreshortening.
Students will learn to draw from the shoulder and elbow to sketch loosely, creating dynamic and interesting figures, perspectives and narratives. Use Procreate’s transform tools, layers and transparencies to edit and style fast!
Other Details
Learning Needs
All of our illustration classes use clearly defined targeted step-by-step instruction and regular interval check-ins with learners, so that learners have natural breaks and choices built into their learning experience.
Parental Guidance
A variety of Anime and Manga subjects will be created in class. While we will not use references that are too explicit, we may use age-appropriate references from manga and Anime series that contain more explicit content. Most kids and teens will already be familiar with all of our references if the are fans of manga and anime already!
Supply List
1. An ipad with Procreate already installed and ready to use. 2. A stylus/apple pencil is recommended, but not necessary. 3. Another device to log into class is recommended.
