US Grade 4 - 7
Beginner Level
8 lessons//8 Weeks
 Week 1
Lesson 1
Introduction to Python
This week, we'll dive into the basics of Python, a powerful and versatile programming language. We will learn about different data types like strings and integers, and how to perform mathematical operations. We'll also introduce you to variables and the concept of good code. Through a mini-project and practice challenges, you'll apply what you've learned and start your journey in coding.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Conditional Statements and Mad Libs Game
In our second week, we'll explore control flow in Python using conditional statements and comparison operators. You'll learn how to make decisions in your code with if/else and if/elif/else statements. We'll also create a fun Python Mad Libs game as a project to apply these concepts. Practice challenges will help reinforce your understanding of control flow.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Lists, Libraries, and Rock, Paper, Scissors
This week focuses on Python lists, libraries, and the rock, paper, scissors game. You'll learn how to work with lists, use list methods, and understand the importance of libraries in Python. We'll also introduce conditional operators and work on a Rock, Paper, Scissors project. Troubleshooting tips and the importance of being a good searcher will be discussed, along with practice challenges.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Loops and Python Animation
We'll delve into dictionaries and loops this week. You'll learn about the dictionary data structure, dictionary methods, and how to use loops to automate tasks. We'll also introduce the Python Turtle library and create a spiral animation project. Practice challenges will help you master dictionaries and loops.
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Functions and Python Methods
This week is all about functions and floating-point numbers. You'll learn how to create and use functions, understand type casting, and work with floats. We'll apply these concepts in a mini-project and through various practice challenges. This week is crucial for building a strong foundation in Python programming.
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Review and Login System Project
We'll dive deeper into functions this week, focusing on global and local scope. You'll learn how these concepts affect your functions and variables. We'll also start a project to create a Python login system, applying what you've learned about functions. Practice challenges and discussions on lifelong learning in coding will round out the week.
 Week 7
Lesson 7
Guess the Number Project
In our seventh week, we'll explore additional operators in Python, such as the remainder and not operators. You'll learn how to use these operators and understand their importance in programming. We'll also cover incrementing and decrementing in Python. The week will culminate in a "Guess the Number" project and practice challenges.
 Week 8
Lesson 8
Updates, PyGame Zero, and Space Catcher Game Project
In the final week, we'll discuss recent updates in Python and introduce the PyGame Zero library. You'll work on a "Space Catcher" game project, applying everything you've learned in the course. We'll also reflect on what interests you in coding and how to pursue those interests. Practice challenges will help solidify your understanding of Python and game development.
This class is taught in English.
Students will be introduced to Python and learn the foundations of the programming language. This allows them to confidently move onto more complex code and continue their coding journey. The class is also intended to encourage students to get excited about the possibilities of coding and computer science!
Over 5,000 students from nearly 100 countries across a variety of platforms have started coding in one of my classes. I offer classes covering the foundations of Python and AI. I am the author of the soon-to-be released book All About Python for Kids. Before teaching, I worked as a software developer for nearly 10 years. I've worked for organizations including Apple, Dell, and Best Buy. I believe the best way to learn is by doing and all my classes are based around hands-on projects that progressively build in difficulty. I'm a graduate of Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. I can't wait to meet your learner in the class and get started soon.
Homework Offered
There are practice challenges and review questions that every student is encouraged to complete. These usually take about 1 – 2 hours per week.

Students will need to be very comfortable typing with two hands and know how to copy/paste on their device.
Students will use Code with Mu, a free code editor designed specifically for beginners. Code with Mu requires any Windows, Apple Mac, or Linux computer. Students using Chromebooks can utilize the free Raspberry Pi Python code editor for this class. We will also utilize the official Python documentation (instructions) from Python.org as a reference throughout the class. Also, we utilize Pygame Zero for our final game project.
