All About Insects! Identifying Insects Through Song and Hands on Activities
Class experience
US Grade Preschool - 1
In this one time class, students will learn about the parts of an insects. We will begin our discussion by creating a guided drawing of an ant and learning that all insects have three body parts and six legs. Learners will be immersed in scientific language as we use and write the scientific terms to describe these body parts (head, thorax, abdomen.) Learners will be able to determine if a "bug" is an insect by counting the legs and looking at the body parts of that insect. We will...
Learning goals for this lesson include: -Learners will be able to tell if a "bug" is an insect or not -Learners will know the three body parts of an insect -Learners will create a model of an insect -Learners will sing a song to help them remember the scientific vocabulary from the lesson
One of the things that I have learned in my 14 years of experience as an elementary teacher is that students learn best through repetition, song, and hands on experiences. I spent 10 years teaching in a STEM lab and I know the importance of keeping young learners moving. Children are fascinated by bugs and through this hands on approach, you will find your young learner searching outside for "bugs" to identify long after the lesson is over.
1 file available upon enrollment-An egg carton segment cut to have three sections connected. See the image attached in the file for clarification of how to cut the egg carton. Students are welcome to bring materials to make more than one insect if there is time. -Pipe Cleaners that are cut in half (8 for each insect) -Google eyes -Crayons, Markers, or Colored Pencils -Sharpened pencils -Paper
Young learners may need assistance with adding pipe cleaners to our project towards the end of class.
