45 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
In this ongoing class, learners will have the chance each week to meet up and discuss everything about anime! This is very much a social club, and so every class will be driven largely by student input and enthusiasm. As the teacher of the class, it is my goal to facilitate discussion so that students can feel welcome and free to express their ideas, opinions, and passions. I also hope to broaden their horizons within the medium of anime, meaning that this class is not only an opportunity to discuss things about anime students love already but also a chance to learn more about anime, manga, and Japanese culture both from me as a teacher and from their fellow classmates. In the midst of this, students will have the chance to improve their communication and listening skills and even make friends! NOTE: This version of the class is designed for 9-12 year olds. If you have a teenage learner, I have a version of the class designed for children aged 13+. Given that this is a social class, please enroll your child in the appropriately aged group! Topics in the class will be largely student driven! We will start the first week off by discussing our favorite anime and then decide future topics from there. In any given class, students will have the chance to discuss their favorite anime, share series they may be currently watching, examine heroes and villains and every character in between, compare and contrast different shows, among other things! Given that this is a largely hobby based club, a more student-driven approach is appropriate and topics will vary from class to class! It probably goes without saying that students should come into class having watched at least some anime, but whether they've been anime fans for a few weeks or several years, all are welcome so long as they are enthusiastic and ready to learn and share! Students are of course welcome to join in at any time! Please contact me if you are interested in taking the class but are not available at the above time(s)!
Learning Goals
Students will learn to express their thoughts and opinions and a fun and constructive way. They will gain an increased appreciation for anime as a medium, learning to approach the stories they love from new perspectives and gaining exposure to new stories and information about Japanese culture. They will have the chance to make friends with like-minded students along the way!
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Given that anime is a broad storytelling medium, there are some anime more appropriate for children and others more appropriate for adults. I am aware that different students in this class will likely be at different levels of what they and their families may feel is appropriate. It is likely that some students will mention more mature anime in classroom discussion, but I will moderate discussion away from particular mature topics within the context of each class. If there is any topic your family or child is sensitive to, please reach out to me in advance and I will make sure to take particular care if such topics come up.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a longstanding anime fan and love to talk about it! I have watched many shows from different genres over the years and am familiar with both classic and more modern series. I also minored in Japanese language and culture and therefore have the ability to provide students with more information about the cultural background of many of the stories they may love!
