Description
Class Experience
This class is perfect for a student beginning the study of algebra, as well as for a student who needs to review the early part of algebra. To be successful in this class, students must be proficient in working with positive and negative integers, decimals, and fractions. This is a flexible class with no live class meetings, allowing students to work at a time that is convenient to them. Lesson materials will be posted twice a week, becoming available on the day listed below. Assignments...
Students will gain a solid understanding of the basic topics covered in the first quarter of Algebra 1.
I am an experienced and certified classroom instructor having taught classes from pre-algebra through calculus. I have also tutored students on an individual basis for many years. So, I know the common misconceptions students develop on math concepts and structure my lessons to help students avoid those mistakes.
Homework will be completed by each student individually. It will be a worksheet of problems similar to those covered in the lesson. The homework will take 30-60 minutes per lesson, so 1-2 hours per week total. Each student must post the work-out solution to one problem in the classroom for each homework set. The student may choose any problem not already posted by another student. The solutions to the previous lesson will be provided so that students can check their work.
Students should have paper and a pencil while watching the videos, so that they can work out the practice problems. It is also helpful to have a printer if you want to print out the worksheets, quizzes, and tests. However, that is not necessary. I will also accept the quizzes and tests written out on paper. Just make sure that the problems are clearly numbered.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
At the end of units 1 and 2, a quiz will be posted. At the conclusion of Unit 3, a test covering all of the course material will be provided. The quizzes and test must be submitted no later than a week after they were posted. If you need additional flexibility in the due dates, please let me know. However, all work must be submitted prior to the last day of class. Personal individualized feedback is given on all submitted assignments. Please show your work to receive partial credit, even if the answer is incorrect. Being able to see your thinking process also helps me give you better feedback.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
