Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 9
This course will focus on the study of multiple representations of linear and non-linear functions. It includes mathematical concepts for working with order of operations, graphing in a coordinate plane, various expressions, analyzing and solving linear equations and inequalities, and modeling linear data. Students will use hands-on materials and calculators when needed in solving problems where the concepts are applied. Students who complete Algebra 1 - Part 1 should be ready to move onto Algebra 1 - Part 2 to complete the semester.
Semester 1:
Week 1 - Variables and Expressions
Week 2 - Operations with Real Numbers
Week 3 - Order of Operations
Week 4 - Distributive Property
Week 5 - Patterns, Equations and Graphs
Week 6 - Solving Multi-Step Equations
Week 7 - Literal Equations and Formulas
Week 8 - Solving Proportions
Week 9 - Percents
Week 10 - Inequalities and Their Graphs
Week 11 - Compound Inequalities
Week 12 - Union of Sets
Week 13 - Patterns and Linear Functions
Week 14 - Graphing a Function Rule
Week 15 - Arithmetic Sequences
Week 16 - Slope Intercept Form
Week 17 - Point-Slope Form
Week 18 - Exam Review

Requirements: Students should expect to have homework almost every day/night in this class. It is strongly recommended that students set aside at least 20 minutes per day for doing homework. Homework will be graded for understanding each week. Homework is 10% of overall grade.

Quizzes and tests make up the majority of a students’ course grade. But remember, if you aren’t practicing the math we are learning by doing your homework and class work on a regular basis, your scores on these quizzes/tests will more than likely be lower than they would be if you did do your homework every day. Quizzes are 25% and Tests are 60%of overall grade.

Other possible grade includes attendance and participation. Attendance/participation is worth 5% of overall grade.
If you ever feel you need more help than what you are receiving during our regularly scheduled classroom time, you should contact me and make arrangements to get extra help through e-mail or scheduling another time. I am very willing to help you. You just need to ask!

Grading Scale Description
A 90-100% Exceeds Expectations; Independent learner; superior work; all work completed on
time at an exceptional level of quality and effort;
B 80-89% Meets Expectations; Semi-independent learner; above average work; all work
completed on time; did quality work with a few flaws;
C 70-79% Passing but does not meet some standards; Dependent learner; average work; most
completed on time showing average effort;
D 60-69% Passing but only meets minimum standards; Dependent learner; average work; most
completed late showing below average effort;
F <60% Failing, does not meet minimum standards; Failure; does not meet standards or expectations.

Supply List
Curriculum materials will be provided by the instructor. Students will need a printer to print notes and assignments. A basic calculator is needed (TI-30x) or a graphing calculator (TI-84). Also students can use a calculator app like Graphing Calc 2. Recommend pencil / paper for taking notes during meetings as well as a small whiteboard with dry erase markers along with an eraser. Also needed, graph paper, ruler, colored pencils, eraser and a 3 ring binder with dividers and plenty of paper for note taking.

I am offering this series of classes because I have taught this subject before many times. I get very excited to see students that want to find out new things as well as use what they have already learned in math. I believe that all students can learn math if given different approaches. Everyone does not learn the same way so I offer a variety of methods. Please see for yourself.
