includedClass Experience
US Grade 8 - 11
Students will have personalized help and practice in class to help them get Algebra 1 to make sense. Students will interact with each other as well as the teacher over the classroom messages as well as on the video classes 4 days a week. We will use Khan academy as the curriculum and for homework. This will enable me to focus on teaching and helping where students have trouble spots instead of sending out and grading each students homework(since homework is graded automatically on Khan). This also enables me to keep the cost of the class low as I don't have to spend extra time outside of class doing that. Each student will get a personalized plan and will be doing their plan weekly. This means the topics covered each week will vary depending on what students are asking for help with. I will have two devices signed in, one in the main room and another in a breakout room where I can do 1on1 tutoring style help when students have trouble with things. This class is meant for students who do not enjoy math, I originally planned this class to take place twice a week so it would be less expensive but found that students that were in this situation didn't do well with a lot of homework(which that type of class plan required). In light of this I have made this class 4 days a week and it will have less homework(20 minutes a day). Class time will be structured as follows: 5 minutes - review 20 minutes - students ask me questions and do math work 5 minutes - talk about homework Topics Covered in a general student plan (dates will depend on when your student joins): ***Fractions - Review of fraction arithmetic and learning new things about it. Intro to Variables – Helping students learn what variables are and how they interact with other mathematics processes. ***Decimals – Helping students learn where the decimal places are as well as how to do arithmetic with them. ***Negative Numbers – Review of negative numbers and then learning how they interact with variables and other processes. ***Exponents and Roots – Reviewing exponents and then how to deal with exponents on variables as well as how those interact with roots for the exponents. ***Factoring and the Distributive Property – When dealing with exponents on variables we need to know how to use factoring and distribution to get those variables by themselves. ***Factoring and the Distributive Property - When dealing with exponents on variables we need to know how to use factoring and distribution to get those variables by themselves. ***Linear Equations – Helping students learn how to solve many different types of expressions and linear equations. ***Linear Applications – Helping students learn how to use these aforementioned equations to solve intermediate problem types. ***Linear Inequalities – Students will apply Chapter 7 and 8 in a new way with inequalities. ***Quadratic Equations - Learning what they are and how to factor them. ***Quadratic Applications - Students will learn how to use these Quadratics to solve difficult problem types.

Hello! I'm Matthew and I'm excited to help you with your educational goals!
A little about the classes I teach:
- I teach Languages: English(Masters in TESOL), all levels, and Chinese, specialized for beginners.
- I also teach Math(Bachelors in Econ) especially helping students who seem to be lost find their way.
- Since 2016 I started to add standardized tests to my tutoring schedule. I have tutored dozens of students in each of the following standardized tests: IELTS, TOEFL, ASVAB, SAT
- One of my passions is History and I love to teach it as well. I teach Roman, Ottoman, and English language history.
My Background:
I started tutoring ESL when I was in college way back in 2004. I moved to Thailand to teach ESL in 2007 and taught there for one year. I returned to America and started to learn more about teaching and from 2009-2011 I continued tutoring ESL in the US. In 2012 I went back to Asia and taught ESL at a University in China for 4 years. After that time I decided to get my Masters Degree in TESOL so I came back to the states and recently completed that(summer 2019). From 2016-Today I have been doing small group and one-on-one teaching on the topics listed above.
Teaching Philosophy:
I believe in finding ways to get students intrinsically motivated. If a student has no desire to learn it will be a long road but if we can tap into their interests and find something they enjoy in our classes it really propels them along to continually improve.
As far as actual teaching goes I have found that patience and persistence is the key, IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW MANY TIMES you make mistakes or get something wrong. What matters is that you continue to get up and try again; if you do that you will conquer any topic.
