Each lesson, students will be given instruction based on the syllabus listed below. Students will be given time between lessons to check-in with Mr. Wittmer to ask clarifying questions on that lesson's key concept via Outschool communication, or video conference calling. This course is designed for the learners to receive instruction on one of the biggest concepts that is covered in the Algebra 1 curriculum, equations. Each lesson explains the various different forms in which you may see an equation through the Algebra 1 curriculum. Each lesson will provide major vocabulary, algebraic properties, explanation of the concept being taught, tools in which students can use when their teachers are not with them to help solve and of course several examples (ranging in difficulty) that will be worked out as a class (all examples will not be worked out in class). For each lesson students will have the option to print out a Lesson Worksheet and they will have access to the KEY to that Worksheet. Even though we as a class will not have enough time to work through every single problem, students will still have access to all the answers. The last day of class will be a collaborative team Jeopardy showdown having the students demonstrate their understanding of everything that was learned over the span of this course. Each class will be content delivered from Mr. Wittmer via direct instruction/lecture. Following the lesson, students will be given an opportunity to interact and ask questions about the day's lesson and they will be assessed through Google Forms. In addition, Mr. Wittmer will be available via email if there were any questions not answered during the class. PREREQUISITES: Students should possess good problem solving skills, self-advocacy skills, and a willingness to learn in new ways. Some topics students should be comfortable with before this class includes understanding the Order of Operations, the basics of solving an equation, and the basics of the Coordinate Plane. LESSON 1 (2 day lesson): Solving Equations - Solving Equations • Solving 1 step equations • 2 step equations • Multi-step equations • Variables on both sides • Distributive Property - Applications - Word Problems LESSON 2 (2 day lesson): Equations as Functions - Slope Intercept Form - Point Slope Form - Standard Form - Graphing - Applications - Word Problems LESSON 3 (2 day lesson): Systems of Linear Equations - Graphing - Substitution - Elimination - Applications - Word Problems LESSON 4: Cumulative Review - Before the final class students will have an opportunity to review with the teacher. - Students can ask any question from the previous content covered. - Each student will get an opportunity to ask their question, 1 at a time. - In the event of a lack of questions asked, Mr. Wittmer will provide interactive review from the topics covered in lessons 1-3. LESSON 5 (FINAL CLASS): Cumulative Review - Team Jeopardy - Fun engaging, collaborative cumulative review where students will put their knowledge to the test.
Learning Goals
Students will be giving a crash course on the different ways they will encounter the concept of equations in the Algebra Curriculum as outlined by the Common Core Standards. Students will be able to solve simple to complex equations, they will be able to understand and describe equations as functions and they will be able to utilize different methods for solving systems of equations.
This course is meant to give students a small glimpse of the Algebra Curriculum.
