Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
This is a fun one time class where we'll learn about the life of Alexander Hamilton and his rival Thomas Jefferson. We'll also discuss other Founding Fathers as those individuals lives intersect with Hamilton and Jefferson, particularly George Washington, John Adams, James Madison, Aaron Burr and John Laurens.

Students who love the Broadway Musical "Hamilton" will be especially interested in this class, though you'll do this fine in the class if you've never had any exposure to the musical. We'll discuss inaccuracies in the musical and give context to why the battle and rivalry between Jefferson and Hamilton was so intense. We'll even listen to a few clips from the musical.

We'll discuss their vastly different lives and upbringings, and how Hamilton and Jefferson would come to lead two opposing viewpoints of American democracy.

Class is interactive. Students are invited to participate, ask questions, and share their comments and observations.
Learning Goals
The goal is that students will understand something about the lives of Hamilton and Jefferson, how their backgrounds led them to hold particular views, and the important role both of them played in the development of the American nation.

Teacher expertise and credentials
We live in a big and fascinating world and one of my goals with my classes is to help kids develop an interest and appreciation for the world around them and different cultures. My classes draw from my own experiences as a world traveler. I've visited and lived abroad in seventeen countries. I'm a lifelong student of history and I'm also the former deputy director of the historic home of President Ronald Reagan. In 2010 was a candidate for United States Congress and I am a 2002 graduate of Indiana Wesleyan University with a bachelor of science degree in history and political science. In high school I memorized Patrick Henry's "War Inevitable" speech. Over the course of my life I've read 25+ biographies of America's Founding Fathers. In college I took an independent study course on the Federalist Papers (largely authored by Hamilton). I saw Hamilton on Broadway, and even named my dog Hamilton! I also have several years of experience in working with students as a teacher and mentor and look forward to having the opportunity to invest in the life of your learner.
