Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 4
This class is designed to help kids:
- become comfortable with creative writing (and/or drawing, if the learner wishes)
- increase their confidence in expressing their imaginative ideas orally and on the page
- experience sharing their work with their peers
- develop listening and appreciative feedback skills
- exercise their love of learning and curiosity about the world!

Each 80-minute class will feature:
- an exciting real-world story or fact related to ADVENTURE (space, robots, unusual animals, daring travel, etc!)
- a Kahoot! or similar quiz about the new information
- discussion along the lines of "Would you rather..." and "What would you do if..."
- an easy stretch break, because this class is long
- 20 minutes of creative drawing and/or writing, based on optional prompts
- sharing of our creations
- wrap up and appreciations

This class is intended to be fun, creative, and fast-paced! In the time allotted for independent work, learners might not finish the story they start, or might come up with nothing more than a brainstorm or some doodles. However, everyone's efforts, no matter how big or small, complete or incomplete, will be celebrated in this class! Please note that this class focuses on creativity rather than spelling, grammar, or other writing mechanics.

Parental Guidance
We will be using Kahoot at kahoot.it to play games. To use this, the learner needs a device - the device that they are already using for Outschool is sufficient, if they know how to toggle back and forth between windows/tabs. Another option is to have a separate phone, ipad, computer, or laptop on hand just for playing Kahoot. I will build time into the agenda for troubleshooting using Kahoot but it's best if you try it out before class! Learners do NOT need to have a Kahoot account (but it's okay if they do!). They do NOT need to down load the app (but it's okay if they do!). Kahoot can be used for free on the web on any device without an account.
Supply List
Paper and something to write with.
Markers or coloured pencils are optional.
An extra device for playing Kahoot is optional - it can also be played on the device the learner is using for the class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching secondary-level English, Social Science, and Special Education in a large public school district for 15 years. I have taught small Creative Writing for Kids classes, and have incorporated creative writing strategies into my work as a tutor. My own child is an avid reader and storyteller, so my expertise comes from this as well. Lastly, my short stories have been published in a range of literary journals.
