Class Experience

US Grade 10 - 12
Advanced Level
This class is centered around student needs. A student who is in an advanced class in calculus, advanced calculus, linear algebra, SAT or GRE preparation, mathematical physics, or with other upper level math needs, will bring questions and topics of concern to class. The teacher will explain the topics and how to approach the problems, and we will work out solutions together. Students should be prepared to take extensive notes.

Please note this is NOT a homework service; we concentrate on understanding a few questions in depth so the student can understand and finish the ret on their own; we do not rush through an entire problem set. Please not also we do NOT do take-home tests. Tutoring will be discontinued immediately if students present material for grades.

Learning Goals

Students will learn important concepts in advanced math as well as a powerful problem-solving paradigm that is applicable to a wide variety of subjects.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Mathematics applies to a very wide variety of situations. We model things like radioactive decay, bacterial growth and infection, spread of a pandemic, probability of having a disease, gambling. invasive species and extinctions, floodwater rising, debt and bankruptcy, etc. As we apply math to reality, some of the topics are unpleasant. Learning the math is one way to learn to avoid such problems; you must know how to measure and predict before you can change for the better. If a student may be triggered by any particular topic please give a warning beforehand so we can as far as possible choose other examples.
Supply List
Students need their textbook or course outline plus homework assignments and/or sample exam (NOT a graded assignment but a sample clearly labelled as practice or a former year.) Although I can give lectures on a large number of topic on the spot (beware of asking) tutoring is far more effective when it is focused on specific topics or skills or problem solving techniques.
Students must have a notebook and a pen and be prepared to take extensive notes and to solve problems as we work. Math is not a spectator sport.
Students must have a microphone and camera and keep them open during class. This is interactive tutoring in which we have a conversation back and forth and work cooperatively; I need to hear and see your responses to see how we are doing on getting ideas across. As this is one to one there is no problem with other students.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
Sources will be provided by the student, We will use the internet and my personal math library to find additional practice resources as needed. Normally math even on the internet is not controversial; however as mentioned above some applications may concern issues in the news. This is a class for young adults doing college level work and it is assumed that they are able to understand both the positive and negative issues of life.

I have a BSc from MIT, an Honours Mathematics degree from Bishop's University in Canada, and three years of graduate school mathematics from Dartmouth and the Universite du Quebec, unfortunately had to leave studies for health reasons (respiratory failure unknown cause). I also have an MA in Education from Tufts and a BA in Languages and Linguistics from Bishop's.
I have been teaching and tutoring math at all levels from Grade 1 to college since 1974, five decades now. I have tutored a number of people through university calculus and linear algebra and SAT testing, the Quebec school exams, and the French Baccalaureat math exam, with a very high success rate. Well over ninety percent of my students pass and many achieve top marks.
