Class Experience

Calling all food lovers! Each week, we will explore a different topic. This class aims to provide interesting Cantonese Chinese exposure and to enhance learners’ listening and oral skills in everyday Cantonese conversation.

Please see the “Learning Goals” section for topics that will be covered in this course. Once we have completed all of the topics, the class will cycle back through each lesson. Feel free to join at anytime of the curriculum.

LANGUAGE USE:
*Best learning experience for: Learners who know a fair amount of Cantonese vocabulary.
*Language use in class: Instruction will be given in Cantonese and English. This is NOT a full Cantonese immersion class.

CLASS STRUCTURE:
1/ Drawing demonstration of a food illustration related to the theme: Learners are welcome to draw digitally or with paper and ink. They can follow along with me (I will be drawing in cartoon style using iPad ProCreate). Learners are also welcome to use their own imagination to draw with the weekly theme.
2/ Discussion and Creative drawing time: Learners to add their own personal touches to their drawings and/or socialize with class friends
—————

PLEASE NOTE:
1/ Learners may occasionally need to finish their art after the scheduled time ends.

2/ Materials: We will be using English, Cantonese, traditional Chinese characters and Jyutping as class materials.

3/ If learners are drawing digitally, two separate devices are recommended: one device for drawing and another device for Outschool class. With two separate devices they are able to watch the guided drawing as well as interact with others.

4/ Mute: Learners might be asked to turn their mics off during part of the class for the best learning environment (i.e. to avoid background noise ). Everyone are encouraged to raise their hands to participate and share.

5/ As per Outschool safety policy adults are not allowed to be on camera; Only registered learner can be on camera. Thanks for your understanding.

Hello! My name is Becca.

I am a mom, a social worker, and a multi-award-winning author (of ‘The Story of Us’). I am passionate about supporting children in our proud heritage language, Cantonese.

Here, you can find my personal and educational background, as well as an overview of my fun classes.

My ultimate goal is to promote fun learning. I keep my classes very small so that full attention can be given to each learner.

I was born and grew up in Hong Kong. I am a native Cantonese speaker. I was lucky that my recent publication, a Cantonese-English-Jyutping Journal book has won in the Non-Fiction Young Adult category at the Independent Publisher Book (IPPY) Awards and in the Children’s Activity Books category at the National Indie Excellence Awards (NIEA).

I am a mother to my beautiful eight-year-old daughter, and we live in Canada. I know how challenging it is to encourage little ones to speak Cantonese, especially if Cantonese is the minority spoken language where you live. It adds an extra layer of complexity if you are not a native speaker or if only one parent speaks Cantonese.

Please do not hesitate to message me if there are any special learning needs. I hope you’ll join me on this fun learning adventure soon!

Thank you,
Becca
