Adjectives and Nursery Rhymes: Mary Had a Little Lamb

In this one-time class, students will learn what adjectives are...in a fun "Mad Lib" kind of way...using "Mary Had a Little Lamb" to then find and replace the adjectives in the song with new ones.

Assessment
After the students learn what an adjective is, and we are substituting them, I will be able to informally assess them for understanding by the words they choose to substitute for the song's adjectives.

Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 2
This is a one-time class that uses a familiar nursery rhyme to teach about adjectives. We will first learn what an adjective is and then search for them in the song. Then, we’ll replace those words with new ones for a fun “Mad-Lib style” of adjective substitution, and then sing it with the new words we pick, instead. We will sing; learn, and laugh together, as well. Along the way, students will also have a little practice with syllables, too, as we clap to the beats of the adjectives they choose, to make sure we can fit them into the rhythm. They’ll also learn what “fleece” means. This lesson is recommended for ages 5-8.
Learning Goals
Students will be learning what an adjective is, by using the song "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and then choosing their own to substitute into the song. They will also get some indirect practice with syllables, as we clap while substituting them, to make the new adjectives fit the rhythm of the song. They will also learn what "fleece" means.

Washington Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
I'm a certified K-8th teacher with decades of experience teaching children, most often in K-3rd grades. I have subbed all grades, though, from Preschool-12th grade, and have regularly taught ages 3-18, online, for over four years now, in multiple subjects. I was also a director of a daycare center before going back to school to do a Master's in Teaching Program (Summa Cum Laude). I have a bachelor's degree in Business Administration: Accounting, and I even went to law school! Teaching is my passion, though!
