Class Experience

Beginner - Intermediate Level
In this fun and interactive multi-day course, students will dive into addition. For this course, students should already be able to identify numbers 0-20 and count 0-20. This course will begin with learning to "make a number" using objects. For example, "How can we make 5 using marshmallows?" And then we would learn different ways to make 5 (1+4, 2+3, etc.) We will then move onto adding with objects. 2 birds + 3 birds = 5 birds. These provides another building block as we begin to move towards adding using numbers- 2+14=16. I will be providing handouts weekly which I encourage students to complete for further practice of skills being taught during the course but are not required to be turned in. Through slides, ten-frames, props, hands-on activities, etc. students will experience an interactive learning environment as they work towards mastering addition skills. At times, I will ask that students bring certain items and/or handouts to class to work on together. Those will be provided in the classroom tab before class. You will be given plenty of notice on what is needed for the next class. Many items can be found around your home such as Cheerios, crackers, marshmallows, racecars, and other objects we can count with. I am patient, encouraging and fun when it comes to teaching! I strive to provide an effective learning environment. Please note: I may have to mute students at times for the class to hear instruction or another student speaking. Also, I do incorporate literacy into my math class when possible such as books that we can use for practicing math problems. This often increases learning across the curriculum and is really fun for learners.

Day 1- Introductions, adding with objects, drawing a picture to add
Day 2: Review prior skills, adding using ten frame
Day 3- Review prior skills, adding using number line
Day 4: Review prior skills, adding using number sentences, word problems
Day 5: Review all skills and play addition game.

I will be using these supplies which I purchased for Amazon- ten-frame, number line. These are great to use for continued practice of skills. However, I will also provide a ten-frame and number-line to simply print if you prefer to do that and save money.
