4 live meetings
3 hrs 20 mins in-class hoursHomework
1 hour per week. Most or all work will be completed during class sessions. Occasionally learners may have a few left over problems to complete from an activity running long, a little brainstorming to do before the next session, or an extension they choose to explore.Class Experience
US Grade 2 - 3
Each class session will consist of 2-3 activities that use virtual worksheets and are related to a group camping trip. These activities will focus on using addition and subtraction within 100 for real-world purposes, such as budgeting, making change, planning ahead, decoding secret messages, and keeping score in games. During each activity, we will start by going over the directions and giving learners some time to work on the activity independently. Then, we will come together as a group to discuss our strategies and share our results. The amount of work time and check-in time may vary depending on the activity and the learners' needs, and we may also discuss multiple methods of solving the calculations. Session 1: Planning the Trip Session 2: Arriving at the Campsite Session 3: Games and Canoe Ride Session 4: Hiking Learners should already know what addition and subtraction are, and have some familiarity with multi-digit strategies (this need not mean standard algorithms).
Learning Goals
Learners will practice addition and subtraction, both with and without regrouping.
Learners will encounter multiple methods for calculating sums and differences.
Learners will apply addition and subtraction to realistic situations.

Parental Guidance
TeacherMade is an educational website designed for use in schools. It provides learners with access to a variety of worksheets, tutorials, and practice problems to help them learn and reinforce important concepts. To use the site, learners can either use their real names or choose to sign in with a pseudonym or nickname for added privacy. The website is designed to be safe and secure, and all learner information is kept confidential and only used for the purposes of tracking progress and providing personalized learning experiences.
Supply List
Learners should have access to whatever tools they would usually use for addition and subtraction, such as pencil and paper, handheld whiteboard and markers, counters, abacus, etc. I will do some demonstrations using a simple abacus-like tool which learners can make from two fuzzy wires and twenty beads. For working on activity sheets in TeacherMade, if learners can do so on a device with a stylus or touchscreen that's a plus, but if not, they can get by with a mouse and keyboard.
