Beginner Level
In this one time class, learners will be introduced to the four strategies (tricks) they can use to add or subtract within 1000! Students will learn how to use a hundreds chart, a number line, base ten models, and expanded notation. We will begin the lesson with a game to test our fluency. Following our fluency game, students will be introduced to each of the four strategies. We will practice the strategies together, and students will practice independently. If time permits, we will be able to end the class with a game! In order for students to be successful with addition and subtraction to 1000, it is important that they are able to add/subtract within 10 and understand some place value concepts (three digit numbers are made of ones, tens, and hundreds).

1. Students will need sharpened pencils, notebook or looseleaf paper for scratch paper The problems worked through in class will be provided in a printable format. If you don't have access to a printer, the problems can easily be transcribed onto paper or a whiteboard.
