In Fractions Are Our Friends students will learn how to add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators. They will also learn how to add mixed numbers and improper fractions. The students will learn how to turn an improper fraction into a mixed number and how to simplify fractions into lowest terms. The students will move on to learn how to multiply and divide fractions. I will be teaching live. I will include video clips during class with explanations for our audio learners. I will provide problems to be solved for each student during class for our hands-on learners. Finally, I will be using lots of colors for visual learners. I want the students to feel free to ask questions. They will be encouraged to respect one another during my class. I will give each child a problem of their own to solve. They will have to work the problem out on their own and show it to the class what their final answer is. During this process, if they have questions, or do not understand I will be able to see what the child is confused about and continue to guide them through the process. Students will be expected to already have a basic understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Here is the breakdown for what will be covered each class: Class 1: Adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators, also talking about what the terms “numerator” and “denominator” mean. Class 2: Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators Class 3: Adding and Subtracting mixed numbers and improper fractions Class 4: Multiplying fractions Class 5: Dividing fractions Class 6: Multiplying and dividing fractions with mixed numbers and improper fractions
Students will improve their understanding of fractions. The goal is to help students solve equations with fractions with confidence.
A pencil and paper are required for class. A whiteboard with markers is encouraged, but not required.
