Class Experience

This is a level 2 class which means we will work with double digit positive and negative integers. There is a level one class available that using single digit positive and negative integers only.

In this class students will learn how to add negative and positive integers. They will learn the difference between a number and an integer, and will learn the rules for adding positive and negative integers. Learners will add and subtract integers as a whole class and play a game to further their understanding. Learners will also be provided with a follow up practice page that they can self check.

Learners will need to split their screen or use a separate tab to log into hellosmart.com so they can interact and complete the work.

Sample problems: 25+(-12) =. -25+12=

Introduction to the teacher and peers
Discuss a mathematical situation of "Would you rather?"
Share any prior information they may have (This will help me know how quickly to pace the lesson)
Introduce Vocabulary (this will be on the reference page)
Introduce to when we use integers in real life
Review rules for adding positive and negative integers using a number line. (Also on the reference page)
Interact with the number line to solve problems
Play a game where they work on their own to solve problems (The teacher will see all work in live time)
Use what they learned to explain a visual model that illustrates the rules of adding positive and negative integers. (This is on the reference page)
Summary review and questions

Learners will also be given a follow up page with answer key so they can self-check.

A level one class is also be offered which will cover these same skills but use single digit integers.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello!! My name is Heather Lincoln and I believe in teaching math for mastery with a purpose! Imagine mastering what was once hard. That is what develops a life long learner.

I am currently teaching math classes specifically designed for students in grades 4-9. These classes include algebra readiness, long division mastery and understanding fractions. I have built these classes in alignment with the common core standards. These skills are what I consider foundational math skills that will be the basis for many math concepts in the future. I believe them to be critical for life-long success. Mastering these skills and understanding how they help us in everyday life is at the forefront of every class.

Let me tell you a little bit about my professional background. I have been a state certified teacher for 17 fantastic years. I earned my Bachelor's degree in elementary education and my Master's degree in both math and literacy curriculum, instruction and design. I just achieved the title of senior career teacher within my district which means I have earned sixty graduate credits beyond my masters degree. Currently I serve as the school based teacher leader, math lead teacher and middle school coordinator at my wonderful school! Two years ago I was also awarded the Lindback award for distinguished teaching.

I strongly believe that everyone can be successful with the proper tools. Imagine building a house with tools compared to building that same house without tools. My main objective as a teacher is to give my students the tools they need to be successful life long math learners. I focus on guiding them how to think mathematically and understand how to interpret the numbers in the context of real-life situations.

I am so excited to be teaching here at Outschool!
