Class Experience

Together we'll tackle adding fractions, from the basics to the pro moves. After a quick warm-up to solidify our fraction sense, we'll use models and representations to examine what's really going on when two fractions are combined. We'll then use these models to build efficient strategies for adding fractions with like and unlike denominators, and even improper fractions and mixed numbers.

Students will have the chance to observe demonstrations and modeling of explicit strategies, and will also be challenged to show and explain their own solutions through guided practice. I don't just want my mathematicians to be able to solve quickly and accurately, I also want them to understand why their efficient strategy works, and to be prepared to capitalize on connections for other important skills!
Learning Goals
Students will be able to solve (and represent!) problems with addition of fractions - including with unlike denominators!

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I’m an experienced elementary educator, professionally certified in both Massachusetts and Scotland. A life-long learner, I put off specializing as long as I could, studying film at university and then trying my hand at baking bread, selling maps, developing exhibits for museums, and even living and working on a wildlife refuge. Then I discovered teaching - the perfect way to feed my own need for continued growth while connecting and sharing with young minds. Developing meaningful and engaging lessons for upper elementary students hasn’t just made for a rewarding career - it’s also helped me to grow as a reader, writer, and thinker myself.

Now I'm excited to connect with students and families all over the world! My goal is to inspire curiosity and confidence through engaging lessons and activities. Remote learning is hard (I know - I finished the last 10 weeks of the 2019-20 school year from my kitchen table!), so it has to be fun, clear, and engaging. I'm excited to get to work!
