The student will learn the following definitions: fraction, numerator, denominator, and Least Common Denominator (LCD). The first day they will learn how to add and subtract fractions with a common denominator. The second day, they will look at fractions with different denominators, and learn how to find the Least Common Denominator (LCD) of both, so that the fractions can be added or subtracted. On the third day the class will spend time working problems with fractions, and be introduced to Unit Conversion Factors (UCF), and their purpose. I will use graphics and solid models and the students will have problems to work. I have provided web links for out-of-class reinforcement and help. Knowledge of the number system and the ability to add and subtract is helpful. The student's homework will consist of problems given to them on a worksheet. I give an optional final exam, so that each student can determine proficiency, and I can assess learning. *If the student needs homework and/or testing in a different format, please advise me before the class begins.
