informal assessment through Q&AClass Experience
This one time class will teach the foundational comprehension skills for Non-Fiction texts. I will be utilizing the Notice & Note Signpost strategy created by Kylene, Beers, and Probst. I will use a Slide Deck to teach the 5 main signs to looks for (Extreme Language, Word Gaps, Contrasts/Contradictions, Numbers& Stats, Quoted Words) while reading. Later, I will model how to read an article and what questions to ask myself when I come across these signs. Learners will be given a sample article to read and practice the strategy using the organizer provided. Learners will leave with a helpful bookmark, organizer, and notes they can use for future readings outside of class.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to interpret non-fiction texts and understand the author's purpose by utilizing the Signpost strategy.

Hello, my name is Mrs. Mohammad. I am a passionate educator with 7 years of experience as a Middle School English Teacher at a public school. I graduated from Rutgers University with a BA in English and MA in Education. Since then, I have become a tenured teacher, taught various levels of English, and Co-Advised the Model U.N Club. I am proud to say our team won several awards at competitions, at both the State and International Level.
I am dedicated to finding each learner's unique learning style so they can be pushed to progress. I am also committed to meaningful learning that allows learners to connect what they are learning in the classroom to the outside world. I differentiate my instruction and utilize various strategies and resources throughout my lessons from Slide Decks, graphic organizers, games, videos, quick-writes, class discussions, Socratic Seminars, and conferencing.
The primary focus of my classes will be on reading and writing. However, I hope to offer a few classes on public speaking and vocabulary based on my experience as a Model U.N coach.
I look forward to meeting your student and creating a positive classroom environment where they can thrive and grow!
