Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
***Note: For the week of Feb. 20, 2023 classes will meet on Wednesday and Friday instead of Monday and Wednesday due to the U.S. Federal holiday on Feb. 22, 2023.***

***Learners must already know how to multiply and divide. While it is not necessary for learners to have all their multiplication and division facts memorized to take this class, it is helpful for them to have a tool like a multiplication chart available so that solving the basic facts doesn't hinder learning the process of multiplying and dividing larger numbers.***

In this multi-sensory course, learners will build on their knowledge of basic multiplication and division facts to solve problems involving larger numbers. Learners will multiply 2- and 3-digit numbers by a 1-digit number and divide 2- and 3-digit numbers by a 1-digit divisor. This course will focus on using number patterns to solve problems, not just the algorithms, to develop a deeper understanding and number sense. Learners will use visual strategies, movement, and games in each class making the lessons interactive and fun. Extra resources (worksheets and/or Blooket games) will be provided for learners to practice the skill in between classes.

The sequence of skills is as follows:
-Multiplying by a Multiple of 10
-Using Estimation to Make a Reasonable Guess (including underestimates vs. overestimates)
-Multiplying using the Box Method (Open Array)
-Multiplying using the Partial Product Method
-Practice Multiplying using Preferred Strategy
-Dividing a Multiple of 10
-Dividing using the Partial Quotient Method
-Dividing using the Box Method
-Practice Dividing using Preferred Strategy
-Mixed Review with Word Problems

Maryland Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Eighteen years as a public school teacher in Maryland and two years as an Outschool teacher have provided me the opportunity to teach learners from diverse backgrounds with a variety of learning styles. I began my teaching career in elementary school, teaching all subjects and earning my Masters of Education with a certificate in Gifted Education from Johns Hopkins University. Later, I added both Middle School Math: 6-9 and ESOL Pre-K-12 certifications to my professional certificate. Most recently, I taught middle school math, working with both accelerated students and those with Special Education needs. Because of my varied experiences, I have many strategies to help all kinds of learners.

Math is my passion because while there may only be one correct answer, there are often many different ways to solve the same problem. Exploring those different ways and finding a method of solving with which each learner feels most confident is what I love to do. I like to incorporate hands-on strategies, games, and interactive activities into my lessons to make math less scary for reluctant mathematicians and more engaging for everyone.

When I’m not thinking about math, I enjoy baking, cake decorating, drawing, working in my vegetable garden, and sewing. In my spare time, I can be found hiking, kayaking, bird watching, doing a puzzle, or assembling furniture. I look forward to meeting your learner!
