This class is all about studying Uta Hagen’s concepts of Acting. Please take a look at the syllabus to get an insight into our week by week lessons. We will be taking a deep look into the process of an Actors preparation using Uta Hagen’s Respect for Acting. We will start from the bottom up and slowly build our understanding until ultimately students have a clear and functional process in how they can build a performance full of life. Not only will we grow from this class as performers but we will learn the importance of supporting our class mates and the collaborative effort it takes to develop characters and plays. Students will take so many skills from this class, we will build an understanding of things such as analysing a script, historical research, themes, developing a character, self reflection, building confidence, storytelling and improvisation amongst many things. The idea of this class is to offer students the chance to develop a strong foundation within one concept of Acting and give them a chance to really show and learn what they are capable of. Handouts of class subject matter will be provided during lessons but a copy of the book for learners is suggested in order for them to deepen their understanding of the material and develop personally outside of class time. These classes will have us starting the process of how we will develop a Character, we will look at our own personal behaviour, how to find truthful ways to walk and talk on stage and how to use our own experiences to inform our Characters experiences. We will learn and practice some exercises, simple tasks that help us find truth on stage. We will learn how to be in the moment and deliver stand out performances without being overly self-aware. I am proud to be able to teach Uta Hagen to a level that you will not find outside of prestigious and expensive Drama Schools and make it accessible to any interested or aspiring young Actors. Whether or not you want to become a professional Actor, enjoy amateur dramatics or simply find the process interesting and would like to build some confidence, this class will cater for all of those people. Acting is all about teamwork and supporting cast mates (class mates in this case) so in this class we will all come together to learn new skills and help each other grow as Actors and as people.
Learning Goals
As each week passes, students will gain a deeper understanding of the concepts developed by Uta Hagen and will grow confident in their abilities to understand and utilise the teachings.
