8 in-class hoursHomework
1 hour per week. I will expect learners to do a simple underpainting for every class. Often this will be done in class time, but not always. If a video is needed I will provide one. Usually this underpainting will be a simple solid coloured background.Assessment
I will provide helpful feedback if the learner sends me a photo fo their painting in the learner area. If the student does not submit the painting they I can not provide additional, valuable feedback.Class Experience
In this 6 part course, we will focus on a variety of different acrylic painting techniques and paint 5 lovely paintings. (see attachment for photos) On top of acrylic painting techniques, learners will also learn about basic composition and lighting. Week 1: we will paint “Sunset Wheat Field” using a sponge, fam brush, stippling and detail work. We will also start painting “Mountains at Sunset” Week 2: we will finish painting “Mountains at Sunset”. This painting uses a lot of blending, gradient, and textural stamping. Week 3: We will paint an owl. This painting introduces dabbing and uses detail work Week 4: We will paint the “Rainbow Tree”. This takes dabbing to another level and requires a looser style of background painting. Week 5: We will start our hummingbird. The hummingbird is a 2 week painting. We will do our drawing and background painting which is impressionistic and loose, and also out bird underpainting. Week 6: We will finish our hummingbird. This class combines layering with dabbing, stippling, and fine detail work. These are step by step sessions. I will paint along with my learners and pause for questions after each step. Learners will be following along with me as we paint and interact. Every class gets slightly more difficult and introduces a technique that will be used in the next class. This is a great course for “seasoned” beginners and artists who already know how to paint but want to experiment with acrylics. Students don't need a lot of painting experience, but ideally they will used acrylics a few times before this class. Ideally students will have taken Acrylic Painting Boot Camp Part 1 before this class, but it is not a requirement. Older learners are welcome to join, as are slightly younger learners with painting experience and a passion for art! Younger learners may need assistance with a blowdryer.
Learning Goals
Acrylic painting techniques: learners will refine existing techniques as well as learn about: Blending, dabbing, textural painting, layering, directional brushstroke work, fine detail painting.
On top of acrylic painting techniques, learners will also learn about basic composition and lighting.
Patience and persistence: Art is a lot of fun, and part of that fun is a rollercoaster of successes and struggles. Students who complete a 6 part class will (hopefully) challenge themselves enough to make mistakes, learn from them, and grow as artists.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Learners will likely need to use a blowdryer for some paintings.
Supply List
• 8 OR MORE PAINT COLOURS: Yellow, Red, Blue, Green, Orange, Brown, White, Black NOTE: Better quality paint usually results in better paintings. My go-to paint is Winsor Newton (I recommend this). However I often use Deco Art Acrylic Paint for classes because it’s more affordable and most students use that brand. • 8 OR MORE PAINT BRUSH: Thick flat brush = at least 1in wide. Medium flat brush = apron 1/3 inch wide. Medium round, hard bristled brush. 2 Medium round, soft bristled brush. Very small, thin rounded brushes (0, 2/0) Fan brush. • 5 GOOD PAINT SURFACE: Hard canvases like a canvas board or wood boards. Two 8x8, two 8x10 and one 10x10 canvases are ideal. That being said approximately 8x10 will work for all paintings. Paper will not work. • 4 PRACTICE PAINT SURFACES: I use thin, smooth, sturdy cardboard from a cereal/cracker/cookie box or frozen food box is perfect. Paper will also work. This is just to test out techniques/paints. • PALATE: I use plastic lids from old containers • OLD RAG/CLOTH • WATER CONTAINER • PAINTERS TAPE • KITCHEN SPONGE • PENCIL AND ERASER • BLOW DRYER

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree from Alberta College of Arts and Design
I love to teach art, and specialize in drawing (wide variety of styles and techniques), procreate, watercolour, and acrylic painting. When I teach, I like to lead by example. This means that I draw, paint and create with my learners. Throughout class I make myself available for questions, assistance and feedback.
I’ve been teaching art for over 6 years, and I have been creating art professionally since 2011. I have illustrated marketing materials for Denny’s, Newman’s Own, Duane Reade, Discovery Children’s Museum, The Mendes Foundation and other clients.
I also have extensive experience in advertising. I’ve been working as an art director/creative director for over 17 years. I worked in New York City for 10 years, Cambodia for one, and I currently work remotely out of my home office in Canada. In my advertising career I've made TV commercials, print campaigns, radio spots, online ads, videos and billboards (even some in Time Square.) I love thinking of cool ideas and bringing them to life. I am excited to share this skill with my students.
I believe that art is more than an applicable workplace skill. Art is a form of healthy self-expression and personal reflection. I also believe that art teaches the importance of patience and persistence. It is an education for the mind and soul.
For me, art is meditative. I own dozens of sketchbooks filled with drawings I’ve done throughout the years. Many pages contains a memory, emotion, thought or experience. As a mother, I find additional inspiration through my daughter and new son.
Art is everywhere, if you look for it. Children especially have a gift for finding beauty in the world. I hope to harness this gift so every child in my class can find their own unique, artistic voice.
