Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
"Acid-Base Chemistry Essentials" is a one-time class that covers the definitions of acids and bases, the strength of acids and bases, the pH scale, calculations, and titration curves. Acid-base chemistry may seem daunting at first, but it revolves around the concept of hydrogen ions exchange. This class is designed to help students feel comfortable understanding the basics of acid-base chemistry and the types of calculations required for experiments. I have included several visualizations, tips for digesting information, and practice problems. The class will begin with an introduction of myself. I will then explain what acid-base chemistry is and the concepts involved in acid-base chemistry calculations.

Throughout the course, I will alternate between providing mini lessons with examples of multiple types of acid-base chemistry questions and allowing the class to work through similar examples with my guidance. Although no materials are required for this class, the students may choose to bring a calculator, a writing utensil, and paper to document the examples provided. All students are encouraged to ask questions. Therefore, I will frequently be pausing for concept checks. The concept checks will allow students to ask questions, ask for explanations and summarize the previously discussed information. At the end of the course, I will provide practice problems and an answer key so that students may practice what they have learned outside of class.

I have had the opportunity to tutor many chemistry students, and acid-base chemistry frequently becomes students' favorite chemistry subject once they learn the basics. After taking this class, I hope that students will feel confident in their ability to approach acid-base reactions and recognize how chemistry can be made fun!
