Accio! Harry Potter Social Club Advanced (High School)

An ongoing 8-week Harry Potter Social Club for muggles where we discuss our best (worst?!?) Harry Potter theories, play games, answer trivia questions, and immerse ourselves in the larger Wizarding World. Additional sessions to be added.
Class

What's included

8 live meetings
8 in-class hours
Homework
To make the club more fun and connect with learner interest, learners will have the option to choose/make up their own theory for future sessions, to preview readings/content prior to class, or to choose other topics for discussion.

Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
“You’re a wizard, Harry.”
-Hagrid, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

If you’ve read all the Harry Potter books and are eager to connect with other Potterheads, you’ve come to the right place! Together we will:

🥳Celebrate our Harry Potter fandom
🥳Discuss our best and worst theories
🥳Explore JKR’s larger Wizarding World, the Fantastic Beast franchise, food, games, and more
🥳Play Harry Potter Trivia
🥳Create Harry Potter-inspired content such as write short stories, design a Quidditch Team name/logo, create SPEW badges (just kidding, or am I??)…and more!

Sample discussion questions include:
🗨️What if Harry had been placed in Slytherin the way the sorting hat wanted to place him?
🗨️Why is Peter Pettigrew in Gryffindor?
🗨️Which of the Deathly Hallows would you want, and how would you use it?
🗨️What wizarding world career would you be most suited for?

🪄🪄🪄🪄🪄🪄🪄🪄🪄

In addition to discussing the Harry Potter books we will play games such as “Words That Must Not Be Named” (spin off from the game Taboo), enjoy optional Wizarding World dress up days, try treats/foods mentioned in the books (optional), build magical worlds in Scratch, create Harry Potter designs in Canva, and watch occasional fan theories. Please see the syllabus for the flow of our meetings and for tentative topics. Topics may vary depending on learner interest.

I encourage participation as it makes the class more engaging and I believe it’s empowering for learners to share their perspectives. Learners can participate verbally, through the class chat, through emojis, by helping select some of the class readings/games/topics, or through other ways that make them feel comfortable. I respect that not all learners are ready to share. Learners always have the option to pass.

There are no fixed assigned weekly readings as learners in this group should be familiar with all seven books. It’s worth having the books handy as we will use them to look for evidence for or against claims. The class is non-sequential so learners are able to drop in during the weeks they’re available. Learners will be given the option to volunteer theories they'd like to discuss or to come up with their own trivia questions for the group. Learners can opt out of this, as I'll always have backup topics for us to discuss.

Hello!

I’m a huge Harry Potter fan and “I am considered something of a Potter authority.” Five house points, if you got that reference! I've re-read all the Harry Potter books at least once every year since I was in High School.

I've also read: The Cursed Child, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (the screenplay and the book), Tales of Beatle the Bard, Quidditch Through the Ages, and various other writings on WizardingWorld.com, J.K. Rowling's official Harry Potter fan page.

I've watched: all 8 Harry Potter movies, the Fantastic Beasts movies, and love to catch up on Harry Potter theories online. I'm currently working my way through the Hogwarts Legacy game and am loving that too!
