This 8-week course prepares students to write effective persuasive essays and research papers! Mr. Conway's classes are designed to help students overcome the stress, anxiety, and frustration that comes with writing school essays. Though this is an intimidation-free zone, students are expected to write and participate! Students will complete weekly in-class writing assignments, two rough draft essays, and two final draft essays. Students will learn how to research, write detailed paragraphs, construct strong thesis statements, introductions, and conclusions, and how to properly format their essay. Students will also practice using a tools to outline, plan, and compose their essay, which have helped many previous students overcome "Blank Page Anxiety," improve grades, and boost test scores. More importantly, this class will help your young scholar write and communicate confidently. In addition to core writing skills, the course emphasizes grammar, style, and proper MLA formatting, ensuring that students not only write clearly but also present their work professionally. Mr. Conway will provide personalized feedback on all finished essays. Letter grades in the class and on the final draft are available upon request.

Essay Structure Review + Intro to Persuasion
Students will review essay structure. Then, students will learn about persuasive essays so they will be ready to begin their own work next class!

Lesson 2:
Brainstorming & Body Paragraphs
Students will learn about persuasive techniques. Students will choose their topics and complete in-class activities to get a head start on brainstorming. Students will use their brainstorming document to begin their body paragraphs.

Lesson 3:
Identifying Credible Evidence. Effective Introductions & Conclusions
Students will learn how to use evidence to support their claims. Students will analyze effective introduction and conclusion paragraphs.

Lesson 4:
MLA Format! Time to Revise! Time to Edit!
Students will learn MLA format so they can create a final draft of their essay. Students will learn about how to make effective revisions so they can make strengthen their argument and evidence. Students will learn how to edit for mistakes.

Ted Conway has spent his teaching career working with students of all ages that need extra support due to unique life experiences and/or learning styles. He understands the time it takes to learn new skills, and that no student wants to fail — no matter how reluctant they may seem.
For the past seven years, he has taught English, English as a Second Language, Reading, and Writing to students from 7th through 12th grade, and is certified by the Texas Education Agency in English Language Arts & Reading and English as a Second Language.
Ted earned his BA in Professional Writing from the University of New Mexico in 2011 and went on to earn an MFA in Screenwriting from Hollins University in 2015. He also holds an A.A.S. in Culinary Arts and is a trained vegan chef!
When Ted isn't teaching or studying, he is usually working on a screenplay, creating music, editing video, or cooking up a feast!
