Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 7
In this course, learners will read the assigned portion on their own or with the help of someone else each week and come to the classroom prepared to talk about what they thought. Learners are encouraged to make written or video responses, draw pictures, etc. Whatever gets your learner thinking!). In each book, we will focus on different literary devices with examples from that week's text. We will be discussing tone, syntax, imagery, personification, simile, metaphor, and onomatopoeia. As well as the academic side of reading, we will also focus on the way that readers interact with the story- what they like, dislike, would do in different characters' positions, etc. will also be discussed. My motto is: book clubs are meant to be fun! We are going to learn, but we are also going to have a good time.
Chapters are short in the books so I have put the following assignments into place for each weekly reading.
On Mondays, discussion questions will get posted to the board to allow learners to get thinking and interact with each other.
On Wednesdays, we will have our "brain break" day where either a game or a leisurely activity will be created. Games will either be through Quizlet or Kahoot, and they can be played in a variety of ways including matching, a written test, typing in a "space race" or other featured games on the site with the chosen content. An account is required to play on Quizlet and our class materials will be made private so learners will only be playing games with other learners in this class. As well, Kahoot games, while able to be held live in real-time, will be archived and accessible by learners in our class and made private so no one else can access it for privacy. There will also be media examples of different media for learners to watch.
On Fridays, we will have "Fact Friday" where I highlight examples of a different literary device in the books or highlight a different fact about the book we are reading. Videos from the movie version of these books or the Netflix adaption may be used to supplement the points of this class.
The reading schedule will be as follows (with reminders every Friday of what chapters will be discussed in the following week:
Weeks 1-3: The Miserable Mill
Week 1: Chapters 1-4
Week 2: Chapters 5-8
Week 3: Chapters 9-13
Weeks 4-6: The Austere Academy
Week 4: Chapters 1-4
Week 5: Chapters 5-8
Week 6: Chapters 9-13
Weeks 7-9: The Ersatz Elevator
Week 7: Chapters 1-4
Week 8: Chapters 5-8
Week 9: Chapters 9-12

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Some themes of these books are considered a bit dark, including the death of characters, schemes to inherit money, and orphaned children, but I consulted with CommonSense media to create the age range for this class. As well, YouTube will not require an account, but Quizlet will require an account to play study sets on.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello everyone! My name is Abbie! I finished my master's degree in library science from Drexel University in September 2023; I also hold a BA in English and journalism from the University of Delaware; some of my favorite coursework outside of my major were classes in other forms of writing, literature, art history, performing arts, and social sciences. When I am not in class, you can find me reading anything I can get my hands on and watching LOTS of Netflix. I look forward to talking to you all more!
