Come and join us for this 15 week class where we will take a look at different foods from around the world, learn how what people eat represents different cultures and history, and examine how what we eat has and has not changed over time.

What's included

Homework
2-4 hours per week. Each week, students will have 2 different homework assignments. One will be a series of questions. These are to be answered by the students sharing their thoughts and opinions. The second part is either a recipe to try or a short research paper to write.

In this class, we will learn about different types of food from around the world and how they are prepared. We will examine the different cultures and how they look at the task of cooking and eating. 


Week 1 - American Southern Cooking 
Week 2 -  New England foods 
Week 3 -  American Pacific Northwest 
Week 4 - American Southwest
Week 5 - Different types of barbecue
Week 6 - Foods from Mexico and South America
Week 7 - Foods from Canada
Week 8 - Foods From England
Week 9 - Foods From France, Italy, Greece
Week 10 - Foods From China, Vietnam
Week 11 - Foods From Japan, Korea, Phillippines
Week 12 - Foods From Germany, Austria, Hungary
Week 13 - Foods From Caribbean Islands, Hawaii
Week 14 - Foods From Australia, New Zealand
Week 15 - Class review; immigration of cooking styles and tastes.


Each week, by Wednesday evening (9pm PST) -

-I will email each student a link that weeks lecture and assignments. This will be on YouTube and is in a private account that is embedded into the Outschool classroom page.  
-  Assignments will consist of discussion and essay questions, short research topics, Youtube videos, and worksheets. These will be posted on the classroom page. 
- In my flex classes, each family can determine the level of participation in the course. 
- Communication will be done through the Outschool classroom.  
-I will check in with each student several times during the week to check on progress of the homework, address any questions, or to engage in a discussion about the topic covered. Each student is encouraged to message (through the Outschool classroom) me anytime they have any questions or thoughts about the class.  
- Each week, there may be additional articles, videos, or pictures that will be posted to the classroom page to engage students in open conversations about that weeks topic. 
-Please message me before the start of class if you have any questions.

Learning Goals
In this class, students will learn about food from all over the world and how it is prepared. We will learn about how where we live determines what is in a typical diet, what kind of foods are grown and how they are prepared.

Parental Guidance
Each week, there will be a recipe provided for students to try. Students are encouraged to search for different recipes also. In each class, students will be reminded to NOT attempt any recipes or cooking (prep included) without seeking parental guidance first. Parents should decided on their child's ability to use different kitchen appliances (stove, knife, oven, etc.) or possibly allergens to ingredients listed. Please remember that the cooking assignments are optional. There will also be short research papers, movies to watch, or short webpages to read as options. This class will utilize Youtube videos for sharing of lecture videos, as well as supplemental lessons. All Youtube videos are embedded into the Outschool platform. This class may also utilize Kahoot. Learners will be given a direct link and game pin to play.

I have been an educator on Outschool since February of 2018. I have my MBA and MHA, both of which have taught me the value of conducting research and asking questions.  I have a passion for history, organization, reading, and learning. You can usually find me in the middle of 2-3 books or watching a documentary.
