Diversity is important in STEM as these fields often shape the world's future. In this series we will learn how ideas did just that, the women behind them, and the basic science behind their impact. Each class will include a brief presentation of the scientist and field of study (10 min) and an experiment to solidify understanding (45 min). Scientists and subjects we will be covering includes: Week of August 1 Jesse van der Grients, PhD Subject: Oceanography Activity: "The Benthic Drug Store" Week of August 8 Yanyun Zhao Subject: Food Science Activity: "Edible Packaging" Week of August 15 Martha Chase Subject: Genetics Activity: "Sequencing DNA" Week of August 21 Wangari Maathai Subject: Environmental Science Activity: "Planting a Tree" Week of August 28 Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper Subject: Computer Science Activity: "Coding for Beginners" Week of September 4 Mollie Orshansky Subject: Food Economy Activity: "Food Budgeting" Week of September 11 Lydia Villa-Komaroff Subject: Molecular Biology Activity: "Creating a Plasmid"

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching STEM for four years with a few different organizations to include Graduate Women in Sciences Hawai'i. With this organization, I was the Outreach Coordinator and was in charge of creating all our outreach events for three years. Because of this experience with my fellow researchers I have a broad knowledge of the basics concepts of many scientific fields.
I also have special expertise in many of these areas:
(the arctic and antarctic studies): I have conducted research in the Antarctic peninsula and visited the arctic circle
(enzymes): I am currently earning my degree in Molecular Biology and Biochemical Engineering
(frequency hopping): I served 8 years in the U.S. Army as a communications specialist where I mainly worked on frequency hopping radios
(animal science): I have both a Bachelor and Masters degree in Animal Science
