Description
Class Experience
At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Describe the development of calculus from antiquity. 2. Compute the limit of a real-valued function at a real number. 3. Determine where a real-valued function is continuous. 4. Develop the definition of the derivative as a limit. 5. Find the equation of a tangent line to a function; 6. Apply differentiation formulas to compute derivatives. 7. Differentiate implicitly. 8. Solve related rate problems and optimization problems. 9. Use methods of calculus to identify the salient features of a function's graph. 10. Develop the definition of a definite integral as a limit. 11. Use the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus to evaluate integrals. 12. Use the definite integral to find areas and volumes.
Homework sets will be given weekly. Students are invited to work on them individually or collaboratively.
Lecture notes and problem sets are provided by the instructor. To be successful, a student needs only paper and a writing implement.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Learner progress is assessed through five written "exams" at the conclusion of each major topic. Students should expect to work these independently. They will be provided with a detailed narrative of the solutions.
1 hour 50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
All resources are provided by the instructor.
