In this two week online course, students will read the novel Because of Winn-Dixie by author Kate DiCamillo both in and outside of class and will discuss and answer higher order thinking questions through reading strategy focused activities

We will read aloud 4-5 chapters per session, then students will read independently between sessions. We will have discussion questions (not formatted like school, just a fun talk!) as well as comprehension questions. This book has a lexile of 660L and an Accelerated Reading level of 3.9. 5 minutes] Introductions. Week 1Lesson 1Chapters 1-6We will go over vocabulary, then round robin read chapters 1-6, then discuss. Students will read chapters 7-8 as homework.Lesson 2Chapters 9-13We will go over vocabulary, then round robin read chapters 9-13, then discuss. Students will read chapters 14-16 as homework.Lesson 3Chapters 17-20We will go over vocabulary, then round robin read chapters 17-20, then discuss. Students will read chapters 21-22 as homework.Lesson 4Chapters 23-26We will go over vocabulary, then round robin read chapters 23-26, then discuss. We will discuss the overall theme of the book, character changes and interactions.

Reading strategy focused: making predictions, author's purpose, cause and effect, conflict, character analysis, comprehension, text to self, text to world, text to text connections, drawing conclusions, inferencing, asking questions, weekly vocabulary.
I am a 4th grade English Language Arts and Reading teacher in Texas. This is a novel study that I do with my class each year! Homework Offered
Homework includes reading 2-3 chapters outside of class between each session. Also included will be some comprehension questions that we will discuss at the beginning of the next session. Students do not have to focus on the comprehension questions, but will need to read the chapters in order to be caught up.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
