US Grade 9 - 10
Welcome to an enriching 9th & 10th-grade reading and writing class where students will master all of the core skills from a typical semester. In the first class, we will have an introduction to the class with poetry. Then, students will need their own copy of "Challenger Deep" to read the assigned chapters outside of class. Each week students will be assigned about 60 pages of reading along with a packet that aids reading comprehension. Please note that the chapters in this book are extremely short, often consisting of 1-2 pages and sometimes just a half of a page. Once the book is finished, the teacher will guide students to complete a book report. Finally, in the last week, students will get to explore their creativity by writing a narrative based on the book such as a journal entry from a character, an alternate ending, or a sequel. Parental Guidance
The book we will be reading deals with mental illness and takes place in a hospital. Here is some information from commonsensemedia.org:
It deals frankly with issues surrounding teenage mental illness. Caden, the narrator, experiences paranoid and delusional thinking and is hospitalized. A character attempts suicide. Violence in the book is mostly imaginary and centered on a fantastical ship on which the captain and his parrot want to kill each other. Language is mild, with an instance or two each of "hell," "damn," "bastard," and "ass." Sexual content is limited to hand-holding and one night of cuddling in bed. Caden's parents are mildly intoxicated in one scene. Caden takes a "cocktail" of prescribed medications, and the regimen helps him heal.
Assignments will be shared via Google Slides. You can use the Google Slides with a Google Account or download them as a PDF without an account. Please reach out to the teacher if you need any assistance.
Some classes may include collaborating on a Google Doc, but students can do so without logging in, or can use the chat box instead.
